amazing photo essay
a family farm turned into a subdivision. photojournalist scott strazzante spent years documenting life at harlow and jean cagwin's farm. the house, on which 75-year-old harlow and his siblings had grown up, was torn down on july 2, 2002 to make room for a subdivision

Visiting her childhood bedroom for the final time, Sandy Cagwin spends an emotional moment alone minutes before the farmhouse was torn down.

more here

strazzante later returned to the subdivision for a look at how it's changed

slide show from the chicago tribune here

this month's national geographic also has a photo journal. i can't find it online, but it's definitely worth checking out

thought maybe you guys would appreciate it :hi:

1. Wow. Amazing. Indeed
The "Then and Now" photos really punch ya' in the gut. On our little Nebraska/Iowa road trip last year I saw so much of the 'Vanishing of Rural America'.

Thanks for posting this.

2. Saw your post yesterday,
but didn't have time to respond.

The photo you used in your post next to the one of the girls looking out the window in the slide show (#28 I think) just blew me away. They all had an impact - but that one brought me to tears - couldn't pull myself away from it.

Thank you for sharing this, kagehime.

as the heavy machinery knocks his home down of 78 years packs an emotional wallop!
