2. If you get a chance, watch these guys fly
They should be an aerodynamics class study

3. Do these guys soar like the TVs
or do they do a lot of flapping. I have no experience with black vultures.

4. They combine both
which I find very interesting. See how the wing tips are bent? They do that a lot, I guess it is like flaps.

5. The TVs curl the wing tips too
But they do very little flapping just an occasional slow almost lazy stroke. They just spread those very large wings and ride the thermals.

6. Really like this one.
Nicely done, wjms.

Haven't seen any of these around lately. They show up in droves when someone does a fish dump* down by the pond. Love watching them circle and glide. Gorgeous in flight, real gallumphin' goobers on the ground.

The turkey vultures have a face that only a mother could love, but I think the black vultures 'have character', like the wood stork. Here's one of my up close and personal black vulture shots:

There's a bunch more here - but nothing like what you've managed to capture.
http://s20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/thesurveysez/my%20pics/critters/birds/vultures/?start=all

fish dump*
garbage bags of dead fish emptied out onto the ground along the water's edge.
Why? or who? who knows.
Every once in awhile they do it, and it brings the scavengers out for a couple of days until there's nothing left of the fish that were dumped but bare bones. Just wish the dumpers wouldn't leave the garbage bags layin' there, too.

7. That is a wonderful portrait of a vulture
And I agree about the TVs. They are pretty damed ugly... except when they are flying.
