This was shot in my office with no flash at ISO 3200:

This is a 100% crop of the same shot:

Yup, I traded in my trusty D200 for a D300.

This thing is freakin' awesome. I like to think of it as a non-full-frame D3 :P

2. Yeah, it looks like Nikon has the best sensors for noise. Saw a number

of comparisons and for anything but the high dollar pro stuff they came out on top. Pentax, Canon, Lieca and most others (including my personal choice OLY) all come real close up to 1600. Color seems to be better with Nikon too, not sure if it's glass or sensor tho.

I've seen they all offer "noise reduction" but if I'm reading things right it causes a one stop decrease in shutter speed--in other words, it dials down the ISO by 1/2. You can do that with the ISO dial.

edit to add: they seem to outperform everything at consumer levels and are equal to anything at the pro level.

3. Well, I'd only say that for the newest generation of Nikon, the D200 was unbearable above ISO 800
I don't think I ever got a usable image that was above ISO 1600.

I was just blown away at an indoor shot at ISO 3200 with so little noise (and even at 100% crop, the noise was much more tolerable than noise usually is).
