Notice to owners of certain Canon cameras
My Canon A70 stopped working a couple of weeks ago. While looking on the web to get it repaired I came across a site that stated many Canon cameras had faulty CCD's and that Canon would fix them for free even if the warranty had expired. Sure enough I called Canon and the service rep asked me a few questions and determined that it was the CCD. They emailed me a printable prepaid UPS shipping label and instruction for packaging. I sent the camera off(just handed it to a UPS driver I passed on the street). Got an email yesterday and it's on it's way back already.

So if you have a bad Canon camera check the link below to see if your broken camera is eligible for a free repair.

Affected products:

- Camcorders: ZR60, ZR65 MC, ZR70 MC, ZR80, ZR85, ZR90, ELURA 40 MC, ELURA 50
- Digital Cameras A60, A70, A75, A300, A310, S230, SD100, SD110, A40(*), A80(*), A85(*), A95(*), S1 IS(*), S60(*), S200(*), S330(*), S400(*), S410(*), S500(*)

2. It doesn't look like any of those are DSLRs...
...for which many here can be greatly thankful.

3. i have an s3 is and it died on me a few months ago, i was surprised to see my husband
bought me the extended warranty but i shipped it them free of charge and they fixed it and sent it back but it doesn't seem to work the same. I wouldn't buy another one, i have a film Canon Rebel i got about 20 years ago and i never had a problem with it so i'm thinking of going back to using film for a while until i can figure out if i want to buy a new digital camera. The worst part is this camera is only about 2 years old and at the time it was fairly expensive and i don't think it was worth the cost.

5. Nikon's had their problems as well...
but mostly limited to digital point and shoots with battery door latches breaking, and film cameras with the latch for the back breaking. I've had one of each...a Coolpix 775 a friend dropped and broke (screw it on a quick release plate for a tripod and it's sealed shut, however) and bought a N6006 with a broken film door. Bought a "it got sat in water" 6006 off eBay for $25 and swapped the back with my broken one.

Canon to me has had problems with some (not all, they do make some fine equipment) cameras going all the way back to the old AE-1 and A-1. Those had shutters that would lock for no apparent reason and only a trip to repair could unlock 'em.

Since around '72, I've owned F2, F3, F3HP, FM, FE, FE2, N2000, N2002, N6006 (2 of 'em), N8008, N80, Coolpix 775 and a D50 and only one broken battery compartment latch and one film door latch out of 'em all.

For me, the most telling thing I ever experienced was one day back in the early '80's when our local camera shop (remember those?) had it's annual "Meet the reps" day.

The local repairman was there, giving free cleaning and shutter speed testing.

The area reps for Nikon, Canon, Contax/Yashica, Hasselblad, Minolta, Bronica, Rollei, etc. were all there to answer questions and all of 'em brought out the "wowza" equipment for us to play with and wish we could afford. (I drooled over the Nikkor 200/f2 while shooting some quick shots out the front door of the store.)

The Nikon rep pulled out his demo F3 body, borrowed the shutter speed tester, ran it through and wrote down the results for every speed on the shutter dial. He then held the body at arm's length over his head and dropped it onto the floor, which was solid concrete, covered only with a 1/4" rubber mat. He then picked it up, put it right back on the shutter tester and produced *identical* speed results.

He then dared any of the other reps to pull out any of their demos and do the same. He had no takers. I think he sold a lot of folks on Nikon reliability that day.
