8. WJMS, you and mth44sc are turning into THE top photographers in this group...
What is it about the Carolinas, anyway? Is it something in the water (besides reflections, of course)? ;-)

10. pretty simple
pick a spot, put camera on tripod set for 30 sec and shoot until you don't have enough light

seriously, that's it

this one was 30sec at f22 at iso1600

helps to have a calm night, no traffic, children with flashlights, jets taking off, et cetera

Pick a spot, tripod and 30 secs I had locked down. :)

Exposure and iso was what I was after. :)
Maybe also which lens/camera?

Thats the stuff I am always wondering about when I see good shots - and can hopefully guide me towards making equally beautiful shots.

12. of course
I did not mean to sound like a dick, sorry

that was with the d700, and I believe it must have been my 28-105nikor zooom, the exif says 32mm... oddly enough the exif also says I was using aperture priority mode, which is odd, because I never do that... but in the dark, I might have done it accidentally

I could have sworn I was in M

13. No offense was taken at all
It was me being a dick, if anything. :)

Thank you for the info. I thought you were shooting Canon (which of course might do too).
Or am I mixing up names here?

other a point and shoot or two

blueinak, ds1, northofdenali, and others (regadkcin?) here do

and, yes, a camera is just a tool

15. Agree with that
One is just somewhat bound to certain degree, with the brand one picks, when it comes to SLRs and lenses. Unless money is no issue of course.

Its easier for me to directly apply/adapt information about Canon bodies and lenses since thats what I know(a little about). If someone shoots a great picture with the same equipment I have available, then I know for sure that its me thats messing stuff up when I can't. :)
And given Canons latest mishaps with the D5 mk II, I am forced to contemplate if I want to upgrade my Canon lenses or change path before I am too comitted lenswise.

But in general terms and like in this case, discussing the more basic techniques/focal lengths used - it is certainly largely irrelevant.

And I appreciate the information.
I constantly wonder when I see good shot, what kind of decisions went before it and what ingredients went into it in terms of settings and gear. All in the interest of learning.
