It's that time again - 2010 Photography Calendar
First, I wanted to make sure everyone knows how much I am enjoying this year's calendar. I think it is a great representation of all the talent we have here, and it makes me smile everyday.

So, I've started to think about the calendar for next year, and yes I realize I am extremely early in getting started, but I have a whole lot going on in real life. To actually get the calendar done this year, I'm going to need everything put together by the end of August, and I wanted to give you guys a heads up.

I think that basically last year's submission and selection process went very well, and it was much more manageable for me than the previous year's calendar, so I think I will keep the format basically the same. There will be a longish submission period, ending probably at the end of June or so, and then the contests (which will hopefully be blind polling again, same as last year) will be held somewhere around the end of July/beginning of August.

I was thinking about another theme for this year - because I thought last year's theme worked fairly well. What I'd like from you guys now is any theme suggestions and other suggestions you might have based on the previous years' calendar, etc.

I'll throw out the first theme suggestion I had, which was "animals". I thought it might be a fun way to stretch ourselves a bit, and create a visually stunning set of images, and mostly I thought because if we end up with a cat and no dogs or vice versa, I might kill someone. The comments got a little brutal.

3. Did someone say "goats"?
I shot these a couple of days ago at a little lake on the way to Mickey D's with my grandkids for a session in the indoor play area..

Got a couple of geese in the lake too.

Very cool shot, I'm jealous..

Hmm.. We're going to Orlando so the grandkids can do Disney/Universal/etc. in May I think, I might take off by myself for a day and shoot some wildlife, I should have my better telephoto by then.

5. Oh, yeah, the sheep.
I forgot about them. Maybe I'll see some musk ox while I'm out in Nome - that would be something different.

6. you know, I might just cheat and go to the zoo
Or would that not be kosher? I haven't been in years and ours has lots of big, natural looking settings. I bet I could get a good picture of a bear in our new northern exhibit. That wouldn't be any easier than the bison at Shelby Farms. Or I could just submit the turtles.

8. That was my thinking too.
It would also give me a chance to get out of the house & get away from the dogs and cats for a while. Bonus.

11. I guess "Animals" is a good theme then...
it's got you guys thinking anyway :) If you guys are okay, then let's go with that.

All I ask is we end up with one cat and one dog. Beyond that, I think the more unusual, the better.

I'll put up a post in a couple of weeks making everything official.

13. Consider having separate dog and cat contests
That way, if there was only one dog entry, for example, it wouldn't automatically be in. Then, maybe, if someone won both in the dog or cat category AND in the other category, they could take their pick, and the next best would take the place in the other one. Or, something like that...........

It's your call, but I am thinking about having one dog and one cat AND all the best pictures overall.

A dog contest, a cat contest, and another 10 slots for the rest of the calendar. :D

24. let me think about it
I'm inclined to say no people, because of the legal issues of people and their privacy.

20. Thank you.
Yes, it is. They were, believe it or not, pets at a local tire store. I was there getting new tires and they were just sitting there waiting to be photographed.

23. That's why I bought my little pocket cam..
I carry it all the time now, you never know when you're going to see something worth shooting. It came with a ballistic nylon belt pouch and I just keep it right next to my cell phone.

The last time I left it home because I was downloading seven plus gigs of pics I could have kicked myself because I saw an amazing lightning display..

17. What are the tecjnical requirements?
Edited on Wed Mar-11-09 11:22 AM by dbmk
In judging ones shot, it might be a good idea to have an idea of the printing it needs to survive(and the cropping it can endure).
What is the physical size of the end result? (the picture portion of it :) )

(Am I moving too far ahead here? On edit, it struck me that such information would be forthcoming - making me obnoxiously impatient. :) )

I think Animals is a good theme, btw. :)

The technical requirements will most likely be the same as last year. You can find them http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=280&topic_id=45445">here

I hope that helps.
