Just returned from San Diego
Edited on Sat Apr-18-09 11:46 PM by pipoman
Mrs. Pipo (not to be confused with 'Mz Pip' ;-) ) and I took around 20 gigs of photos. Here are 3.

The San Diego Zoo

And the reason for the trip, my son's graduation from Marine basic training.

1. Hi, Pipoman.
I'm use to lurking and enjoying everyone's photos of places far away, and then I was smacked with a sense of the surreal seeing these pictures of where I live! Awesome :) Congratulations on your son's graduation. I'm wondering where the photo of him was taken. I like it a lot because it looks like he's ready for the future in full view of the path that's led him to now. Very nice perspective.

3. Thank you
The photo of my son was taken on MCRD in San Diego. This outdoor hallway is amazing. It is at least 1/4 mile long. I have other photos of the hallway with nobody in them. I will post one tomorrow. Again, Thanks.

10. Ah, the recruiting depot.
Who knew it's got such beautiful features? Thanks for the information and I look forward to your other photos of that hallway :)

11. Here
is another shot of this outside hallway, it is still difficult to fully appreciate the length of this hallway. This shot was taken with a 70-200 f/2.8L which we rented to take on this trip, a truly fabulous lens btw, we will be buying a copy. I took some with a 16-35L (which we also rented), they are a bit different perspective, I can't find that card right now.

18. Oh, my. I can appreciate it, especially
comparing the teeny tiny people to the photo of your son. It's dizzifying! Thank you for the experience, Pipoman!

21. Another view
this photo was taken with the 16-35 at 16 with a full frame camera, the pic above was taken with the 70-200@70 with a 1.6 crop body. (I finally found the card!)

2. Each one of these is phenomenal in its own way and for what they represent.
You are a spectacular artist with the camera and your son looks very smart and handsome.

5. That picture of your son is a brilliant portrait.
I hope he keeps that on his mantel and when he's a very old man, maybe a retired general, nods his head in approval at the young man he was and the magnificent photo his dad took of him way back then.

12. Thanks Jeff
my wife (stepmom) wants that photo printed in a life sized print, she doesn't know where she would put it...we'll see.

13. I have long been of the belief that
every young person who joins any branch, knowing the difficulty and commitment required, has joined for honorable reasons. Some of these young men joined to afford a better education, take care of their families, gain job skills, travel the world, serve their country, etc...I can't think of a less than honorable reason anyone would join.

7. What a fabulous
panoramic of San Diego, I love those smug faces in pic two, and of course your son . . . a very proud and respectful photo.

8. These make me want to visit San Diego again
Great job on all of these. I love the sharp angles of the way your son is posed, and his hat, against the smooth angles and depth of the arches. Perfect!

15. We would go back
next time we will stay in La Jolla, a beautiful town, we spent quite a lot of time shooting the La Jolla beach harbor seal colony.

17. When my sister and I first
moved to California, we stopped in La Jolla to enjoy ourselves on our way to final destination in Los Angeles. We immediately met a fellow MidAtlantic transplant (but of 20years) who was like, you girls aren't going anywhere  and she was right because we knew we were home at last.
Thank goodness, the state senate has stepped in to protect those harbor seals. I love the Childrens Pool but it's home for the seals and their pups, so when you come back you'll still be able to enjoy them!

19. Man, I can't think of a single reason to get rid of the seals
really. There is plenty of coastline and what an attraction...the whole town is a tourist stop...who is it that wants rid of them? We wouldn't have went to La Jolla if I had not read about the seals.

16. Thanks
for your restaurant recommendation slack, it was nice talking to you. It is easy to forget our surroundings while conducting our everyday lives. This is one reason I love photography, it keeps me looking at my surroundings for potential shots.

Love the hallway. And I love the different interpretation the different lenses give it.
