1. It allows you to really see the wasp. You can lose yourself in
the details of the insect.

4. Oh my! If I'm asked, the first one does it for me. Phenomenal.
If you want to use it for an entry, I would prefer, in the spirit of the theme, a hairline border. Otherwise negative space is infinity.
But I won't insist on it
:)

11. My vote is for the first one, but I liked the look
of the second one. It's almost like hyperrealism.

6. It's a little stark on the white
background. But otherwise amazing for detail.

8. Who's a thunk it? The gray softens the starkness of the bug. I really like the
choice of color and also it's intensity. That bug sits great on the background.
But any color that delineates the photo's edge will do for the theme, and that could of course also be white with a tiny skinny 3 pixel border.

10. I like a lighter background. It is hard to get rid of the fringe
around some objects like the left front leg.

13. Maybe a tiny amount of gray? Still...the subject matter is greatly enhanced by the negativce space.

15. I like the first one better
and with a hairline boarder it should really stand out.

17. Positively creepy
Nice image, I just have a minor phobia for stinging insects. They really bug me.
I instinctively backed up a few inches when the page opened.
