Fabric softener works!

Thanks to all the Handy folks out there who mentioned using the solution of fabric softener and water to remove wallpaper!

I did that today since all the hardware stores near us are out of wallpaper remover (everybody's been watching HGTV and dumping the paper for paint, it seems!). I'll never use wallpaper remover again! The fabric softener just takes off the paper, not the drywall behind it.

Our bathroom demolition starts next Thursday, so I wanted to get a little bit of a head start for the background material. I"m feeling very accomplished now.

I really never cared much for the stuff and my one attempt at hanging it was laughable, although the pattern was very subtle and easy to live with.

It's nice to know about the fabric softener, though. It can also be diluted and used for hair conditioner if you happen to run out.

4. I heard you had to be careful

That some fabric softeners contain an oily substance, and paint will not adhere very well.

This is just something I had heard and thought should be checked out before using.

5. Well, reprehensor found out the other day...

that painters tape definitely doesn't stick, so I must have used the oily stuff.

However, I am putting a coat of joint compound over the top of the wall to even things up and sanding, so I'll see how bad it is!
