Middle-aged men and women who practiced yoga for 30 minutes once a week for at least four years weighed less than their peers, according to a new study out of Seattle's Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.
Those who started off overweight had the most to show for their posing and stretching. Between the ages of 45 and 55, they lost an average of 5 pounds, compared with a gain of 14 pounds among those who didn't do yoga regularly.
People who practiced yoga and were at a normal weight at age 45 gained 5 pounds by the time they turned 55. That's compared with an average 8-pound weight gain for the others during the same 10 years.
"It's not huge, but it's significant if you think about it over 20 years," said Alan Kristal, an epidemiologist at Fred Hutchinson.
