My boy Sheridan has cancer!
The Vet called me this morning and gave me the bad news. It had some long, complicated name and I could feel tears welling up in my eyes as she told me. She said the tumor had been one of three possibilities. Unfortunately, what it turned out to be is the most aggressive of the three. If I ignore it, it will eventually grow back and break his jaw. So I have two choices before me...

1) Do nothing, just continue to give him pain medicine and antibiotics and wait for the end. That is not an option for me

2)Or fight back. The good part of this bad news is that this particular cancer doesn't spread. So once it is removed he will be okay. To remove it, part of his jaw must be extracted in surgery. So he has to have a CRT scan to find out how much the tumor has invaded his jaw. My Vet told me dogs who have had this form of surgery do really well.

I have to admit I sat and cried after getting off the phone. I thought Sheridan's dealings with the Vet were over for now. I guess not.

Sheridan has to see a different Vet who deals in cancer and he has a visit scheduled for next week, Thurs. April 24. Please continue to keep good thoughts for my baby. I will keep everyone up to date as I get more information.

1. Sending lots and lots and lots of
:hug:s and of course will keep him in my prayers. Focus on the good news, the cancer sounds like it is contained and can be removed. Plus Sheridan has the best mommy a boy could have and knows he is loved, so she will help him fight to stay around a long time.

2. Did I ever tell you that you are my Fav?

I am so sorry

There is no easy way to deal with this and the tears you
cry show just how important Sheridan has been to you ..
and you to him.

Remember the important question for Sheridan is the
quality of his life not just the length of it .... Ask the vets
about pain, side effects of the surgery and medication,
the path the disease takes, and what they would do if this
was there dog. Now, if Sheridan is just 10% as good as you
seem to be he will fight to be your buddy with all his heart
but please don't think you are doing him or you any big
favor by keeping him going when he is in real pain or the
quality of his life is compromised too much because
friends don't let other friends suffer.

Dogs are wonderful about letting us know what is best
for them. I have been through this a few times before
and please know that you & Sheridan are in my thoughts.

3. Oh, Grey - I'm so sorry to hear this!
And yes, tears are welling in my eyes for you and Sheridan, too.

I think CC's right - if the vet sounds hopeful, then he should probably do very well with his surgery/recovery. And (even!) Botany is right, too: our furry buddies will let us know when we need to let go. From Sheridan's recent picture, I don't think he's ready right now... but only you can be the judge of that.

Sending you prayers, hugs, and lots of love...:hug:

I'm so sorry to hear about Sheridan, but glad that it can be taken care of by surgery. Doggies do better with cancer than kitties. Tons of hugs & kissies for Sheridan & tons of hugs for his mommy.

10. I'm so sorry, Grey
But at least it sounds like if he has the surgery, he should do well. I'll keep my fingers crossed for both of you.
