"If you look closely the constitution says OK to wiretaps after the congress O.K.'s a military response
in Afghanistan to a terrorist attack that we were told was coming."

You have to have probable cause. That can take a long time. It's much easier to argue what the meaning of "reasonable" is. That's where they're going.

Edited on Mon Feb-06-06 08:28 PM by Patsy Stone
They should have done it. The broadcast was on a five second delay anyway. For those in the stadium, 75% were singing along and probably sang it out loud, and the remainder was split between the people who couldn't hear or weren't listening and the kids -- whose parents were singing it (and probably have already sung it) in front of them.

110. And best of all is...I love BOTH the ties!!!
And despite the fact that I am in Ohio where people are expected to either vote early and often or stay home from the polls altogether (that is if we don't get stuck with a provisional ballot or a Diebold touchscreen machine), I voted legally and once per opportunity for my favorites. And somehow, they won anyway. Go figure. If only the presidential election had turned out the same way, we'd all have a lot less to gripe about.

103. Does Brad Blog give links to local
stories on this subject? I doubt by Republican county commissioners would pay much heed to Brad Blog. :(

And, he did give a helluva speech:

Bubbly and charming - Stephanie Miller of Air America took the stage and commandeered the crowd with a surprisingly tight and roaring comedic opening. She did her Arianna / Arnold impressions in an imaginary debate which had everyone in stitches. (Well, maybe not Arianna, but I believe she had left by this time)

In a quiet moment, Ms Miller took a beat and solemnly announced-- I am hear today for three words...

General Wesley Clark.

(crowd erupts in applause)

"General Clark-- I would put you on my future husbands list but I'm afraid Gert would probably kick my butt!"

She tells the crowd that since she has been speaking, three more republicans have been newly indicted. It's clear that she too holds Wes in the highest esteem and having a strong progressive radio voice on our side can only be a boon for WesPAC and any future plans.....like running for some higher office....at some point...down the road...

SNIP

Sincerely humbled by being chosen to introduce Wes, Stephanie likened it to Carrot Top introducing Ghandi!

She rattles off his key resume points, at "Rhodes Scholar" she squeals "Oh, ME TOO!!", finishing with "candidate for President of the United States" bringing on huge applause and whistles...and she then says something about being in Church and prayer and, "Please God, make him run and get nominated" Well the room went wild here-- more whistling than at a Manhattan taxi stand. Woo Hooing like it was going out of style. Deafening screaming like at a rock concert. Out of control -- Dems want Wes.

She looks to Wes and flatly says-- "I don't know General....sounds like there's a groundswell to me..." Then she introduces him at last and again, the applause and shouting goes on forever....the crowd up on it's feet.

Right off the bat he asks the Vets in the crowd to stand up and be recognized. A good group representing all ages rises to warm applause and cheers from an appreciative crowd. I'll bet it felt better than a magnet on a bumper.

Diebold Blocks Alaska Voters From Viewing Election 2004 Results, Data!
http://www.bradblog.com/archives/00002327.htm

Contract with State said to Bar Release of 'Company Secrets' Such as the Records of Who Citizens Voted For
Democratic Official: 'It's impossible to say whether the correct candidates were declared the winner in all Alaska races from 2004'

In just one more story which illustrates the many undemocratic dangers of allowing private companies to "own" our public elections, Diebold, Inc., one of America's largest Voting Machine Companies is currently blocking citizens in Alaska from viewing election data from the 2004 general election!

"All Alaska races from 2004" are now being questioned, said a Democratic party official in a written letter to the state Elections Director.

Questions have begun to arise about results from that election, including the reported revelation that "district-by-district vote totals add up to 292,267 votes for President Bush, but his official total was only 190,889."

The BRAD BLOG has obtained a copy of the letter sent yesterday by Jake Metcalfe, chair of the Alaska Democratic Party to Whitney Brewster of the Alaska Division of Elections. The letter responds to Brewster's refusal to supply the party with the requested data files and outlines a number of additional concerns about the reported 2004 election results.

The complete letter is available for download here in WORD format.

Anchorage Daily News covers the emerging controversy today. Some highlights here :

The state Division of Elections has refused to turn over its electronic voting files to the Democrats, arguing that the data format belongs to a private company and can't be made public.

The Alaska Democratic Party says the information is a public record essential for verifying the accuracy of the 2004 general election and must be provided.

The official vote results from the last general election are riddled with discrepancies and impossible for the public to make sense of, the Democrats said Monday. A detailed analysis of the underlying data could answer lingering questions about an election many thought was over more than a year ago, they say.
...
At this point, it's impossible to say whether the correct candidates were declared the winner in all Alaska races from 2004, Brown said.

The private contractor hired to provide Alaska's electronic voting machines is Diebold Election Systems.
...
Diebold told the state it owns the format, which can't be released because it's a company secret.
...
Under the state's contract with Diebold, that cannot be released, Brewster said.

Never mind, of course, that Diebold's "company secret" has been available for download from the Internet for years, since the company -- who claims to specialize in security solutions -- left the information sitting unprotected on a public download site.

KO please don't criticize the Stones too much. I love them. My favorite uncle worked for London records when I was little and I always got their albums for free and all the publicity stuff (which I wish I'd kept, they'd be worth a small fortune, rats) until Sticky Fingers that is, when their album cover choices horrified the stodgies over at London. I also had Tom Jones records and all the Englebert Humperdink any girl could want (oh that sounded so damn wrong).

56. One of the most amazing books I ever read was
'Autobiography of a Face' about a woman who had had a disfiguring bout of facial cancer as a child and had endured over 10 operations to try and repair her face during her short adult life. None of them were really successful, she commited suicide a couple of years ago. Very sad, I wonder if she could've been helped by this procedure, although her disfigurement was mostly in the bones of her face around the chin.

I sure hope this poor woman's face transplant is ultimately successful.
Wow.

Keith's been making fun of the choice of the Stones since it happened. On Dan's show he was remarking on how the halftime acts just kept getting older and dropping down the ladder of prestige. Wondered whether next year's will be the Dave Clark Five or maybe Gerry and the Pacemakers.

prestige' Whatever you think of them, they're kind of Rock and Roll royalty. Paul McCartney was great last year. These are immensely talented musicians who haven't retired because they love to make music, the money ain't bad either.

108. I believe what Keith was trying to say is:
First they get a Beatle. Then they get the Stones, which you could say is like one step down from the Beatles (that is if you think the Beatles were the best band ever and the Stones are #2). But from there he was thinking, maybe they'll just keep going down the list of British Invasion bands? Which led to the Dave Clark 5/Gerry and Pacemakers snark.

101. Speaking of commercials for Shake 'n' Bake...
...here's yet another example of one of those Things Only Keith Remembers that I love him so for.

He was trying to explain his opinion of the counterproductivity of some of the Super Bowl ads by giving an example from his own experience (as usual). He said that while his own commercials for Boston Market were successful in increasing their lunch business (for the sandwiches), they actually DECREASED the dinner business because the same people who used to come there to get the more expensive dinners were now coming in for the less expensive sandwiches. So, said Keith, the commercials were so successful that they actually created a DROP in the restaurant's revenue...

"AND AH HAYLPED!"

First person to get that reference wins...uh, recognition from me. Not much else. And a nod for being an old person like us.
