Oh, crap -- the weather in NY from next Friday-Sunday
will be rain, rain and more rain. Snow would almost be better. 40s Friday and Saturday and upper 30s on Sunday. Be sure to bring an umbrella, ladies.

5. I was just out on the hotel's site
and it looks like they actually have umbrellas listed with the amenities.

4. Hopefully it is far enough out that
the weather report will change. Though have to tell you, snow would not be better. Everything shuts down for snow, including airports. Most people out this way can not function in snow, hell they can't function if they think it will snow. They are calling for snow tomorrow and all the idiots are out making their French Toast runs, acting like they will be trapped weeks.

6. You are right CC, New Yorkers are a bunch of wimps when it comes to
snow. When I lived in Chicago, my friends just used to laugh at me because they live in 'blizzard' conditions by NY standards as a matter of course. I got used to the snow there, just never could get used to the 'hawk'. We don't have wind like that in NYC.

7. Don't worry, the only problem will be if we try and hail a cab in the rain
Edited on Sat Feb-11-06 10:51 AM by bunny planet
that's damn near impossible. I might try and dig up a gypsy cab service number if we are going far away from our hotel and don't want to take the subway (which I hate I must say). Gypsy cabs are great, I used to travel all the way from the Upper upper West Side to midtown for 10 bucks, trouble is most of the gypsy companies are in Upper Manhattan or the boroughs and I've lost the good #'s. I'll try and dig them up, they'll pick us up right at our hotel. Groovy baby.

on edit, the hotel will probably call a cab for us, duh. I've never stayed in one in NYC before except on my honeymoon, because I lived there. That would seem to be a built in amenity along with the umbrellas. I would recommend one of those really nice sturdy larger umbrellas for two, the ones they sell on the street of Manhattan are notorious for turning inside out and crapping out on you within five minutes if there's any wind. Garbage cans are full of them on rainy days. I'm hoping the weather forcast is wrong.

There's a possibility I will be coming in late on Friday, so I'd have to know where to meet all of you. I have my work in a show that's important to me, opening reception from 6 - 9pm, so I might have to be there for the first hour. Unfortunately this one is not in NYC, you just missed one that was at the end of January, so I'll have to attend the first half hour, allow for driving back home and then the bus in. I still haven't decided whether or not I'll be attending or not because I was looking forward to the smaller KOEB dinner together on Friday. I'll keep you posted. PM me so we can exchange cell numbers.

12. If you dig one up by Thursday
shoot it to me or Sharon so we can use it from La Guardia (if they allowed to pick up fares at the airports).

13. I hate the subway, too
I'd much rather take cabs, but I know how hard they are to get when it's raining. Maybe the weather forecast will change as we get closer. Too bad your show isn't in the city -- I'd love to see your work.

I'm sure the hotel will get cabs for us -- it's just the return trips that could be tough.

8. NOOOOOOOOOOO umbrellas....
Edited on Sat Feb-11-06 02:01 PM by Catchawave
The locals *hate* umbrella people. And, as a seasoned tourista, I do too, and I'm speaking about the danger!

Take a lightweight storm coat (like you see in the Lands End/LLBean catalogs) and think layer-layer-layer. Comfy warm/waterproof/walking shoes are a must too.

This time of year, you won't be out walking that much....and maybe this will help ya'll pack lighter. If push comes to shove, you can always buy "disposable" weather related gear from the street vendors and shops. If you're packing on the thrift, put a couple of Hefty lawn/leaf/recycle (longer!) bags in your suitcase, great for waterproofing, and actually provide a layer!

Gosh, I'm going to miss you guys this weekend :hi: I know you'll have a blast, wish I could be there with DU Team KOEBie/NYC

9. "Pack lighter"
heh, it's starting to look like I'm going to Boston for a week for work immediately after this. So all of a sudden I go from carryon to, "I'm Now Taking Everything I Own." Niiiiice.

Still, overpacking would beat the crap out of flying home and flying back again.

10. LOL.....then I meant....
pack smarter :) Unless you're going to be standing still in the northeast weather?

Which I did for the Macy's Parade'96. I believe is still the coldest on record? Times Square '01, frigid but lots of body heat for those 7 hours, I was way overdressed in my army-navy gear, and sweated :)

Boston is just as benign....:hi:

That would be great.

I'm having dinner with my uncle on Sunday evening, but then you and DG could do something together and I can meet up with you later.

14. I will definitely have an umbrella with me, but
it will be one of those smaller folding ones, not a huge one. It's going to be too cold for just my lined raincoat from the sound of it. It's too tight to do much layering under. I do have a long, waterproof, hooded coat with fake fur lining that I could bring, but it's so heavy for traveling and will be too warm if it's in the 40s. Guess I'll decide on Friday, but that might still be my best bet to play it safe.

I also have no comfy/warm/waterproof walking shoes. My feet hurt whatever I'm wearing if I do too much walking, other than in my Z-coil sneakers, which I will bring in case we go work out at Bally's, which is complimentary for hotel guests.

Pack lighter? No such thing for me. This will be longer than my Atlanta trip and my suitcase was stuffed to the gills for that trip, plus the small carry-on bag I take with all my makeup and toiletries. I am going to forego any jackets to wear over sweaters, though, to save some room in my bag. Just pants and sweaters will take up far less space.

15. I have to ask a question: why no umbrellas?
Is it the fact that the sidewalks are so crowded that they become deadly weapons?

I've been to NYC a lot, but not during rain that I can think of off the top.
