I'm calling bs on the hunting story
http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/C/CHENEY_HUNTING_ACCIDENT?SITE=TXSAE&SECTION=US&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT

This is a bit different than the version that ran in the state edition I received this morning. In the state edition, Mrs. Armstrong said that they were driving around looking for quail. It does not appear that anyone was using a bird dog. :wtf: Whittington was BEHIND the VP, yet was shot in the face & chest.

Personally, I think (if they were in fact quail hunting), some of the Armstrong rancheros were sent out to flush quail towards the road. No self-respecting hunter hunts from his damn truck (unless he's hunting for SPORT, ie, spotlighting deer, etc :grr: ). There are only 3 hunters, & Cheney knew one of them was out looking for his kill (this is a ranch, for god's sake, don't they have bird dogs like every other rancher I know?????). The man is BEHIND him & Cheney still manages to shoot him? Is Cheney blind? Does he not know to check his sights before blowing holes in the sky (or in this case, one of his hunting partners)? Does Cheney believe Texas quail wear hunter orange vests?

Too bad Cheney got so many deferments during Vietnam. I'm sure the Army would have taught him how to use a gun properly.

1. Did you see a clip of the Press Conference?
David:loveya:Gregory is giving Scottie a lesson in bullshit!! :loveya:

IMO, there's a hell of a lot more to this story.
Perhaps Elmer was shooting, and had another heart attack?

BTW - some people are already calling this "Fuddgate."

2. either Cheney was drunk or he had another heart attack.
I don't think he shot the guy on purpose, but this story stinks to the heavens. And you're right about the dogs, too. I could see them having a vehicle nearby -- and it could be that the "road" was nothing but dirt or gravel -- but surely they weren't actually shooting from it.

10. Roads on rachees aren't usually paved
but the "hunting" I recall my father doing required getting out of the damn truck & walking through the brush (scrub, monte, whatever) stalking the prey, sometimes for hours. The way I read this morning's article, however, they were DRIVING AROUND looking for quail & got out when they spotted a covey. (read: the rancheros flushed one out for them.) Some hunters. Not.

Just to let them know that some of us on DU are calling this story "Fuddgate" - as in Elmer Fudd.

You never know when the screen caption person might need a suggestion.

7. Did I ever tell you that you are my Fav EDV?
I have hunted ..... this story so doesn't pass any sort of smell test.
* The S.S. let somebody w/ a gun walk up behind the veep?
* Were people wearing orange vests?
* The man went from one hospital to a larger hospital
and is in an ICU ..... he is 78 and got shot in the face .....
if Cheney hadn't had his rolling medical unit w/ him would
the guy have gone into shock and died?
* The waited 24 hours to break the story?
* You never turn 180 degrees and shot behind you
* how come local law enforcement was not called ASAP?
* why is their reports that the secret service blocked
access to the veep?
* how come no drug or alcohol testing ..... that is the law in Ohio
for all gun accidents.

11. Texas law does not require
that you report hunting "accidents." You do have to report hunting fatalities. I just heard on Ed Schultz (ah the wonders of being home sick cough sniffle wheeze) that the sheriff's office heard about the incident when an ambulance was called to the Armstrong Ranch. Now just hold the phone there, son, because didn't they put the story out that they used the VP's ambulance? County officials are also now complaining that the SS wouldn't allow their officials to interview Cheney, yet, again hold the damn phone there, son, didn't the SS say that Cheney spoke with local law enforcement before leaving Texas? So now we won't know if Cheney was HWI.

My dad was a hunter & my brother still hunts deer, so I know a thing or two about hunting (having once served as my dad's "bird dog"). You don't separate your hunting party. If someone is out in the field looking for their kill, no one else can fire again until the missing parties have been accounted for, even if you miss a good shot. If you're the one operating the gun, you're the responsible party for making sure all are present, accounted for, & out of the line of fire! If there's a human or a bird dog in your sights, you don't have a good shot!

This story just stinks on so many levels .....
turning 180 degrees to shot @ a bird behind you?

And it turns out he was flown to a larger hospital and put into an
ICU ....... and it was just a little thing?

13. The hospital in Kingsville is quite small
Edited on Mon Feb-13-06 04:47 PM by WolverineDG
the hospital that they took him to in Corpus is much larger & better equipped. I believe they took him to the newer Spohn hospital in Corpus, not the older one (where I was born, btw).

edit: damn comma splice

14. but if the wounds were as minor as they say why did they need to ...
.... transfer him? Things just don't add up on this story?

BTW all of those upscale quail hunting places use dogs .....
and you hunt with the dogs in front of you. So the story
of shooting behind him @ a bird just does not hold water.

Sounds kind of bad to me... they don't leave you in the ICU if you're just not feeling great.

18. They were on a real ranch
as opposed to that converted pig farm in Crawford. Lots of open spaces & fields. Farmers starting to plow again, getting ready for spring planting. On the ranch, I'd presume there's a lot of brush for quail to hide in. I just don't think these folks (or at least Cheney) were experienced hunters.

20. The area I drove through
Jim Wells County & Nueces--between Alice & Driscoll, is currently open field. Even on the other side of Hwy 77, from Petronila to CC is open field. In the past, I've seen them growing various types of sorghum & corn. Around Falfurrias (the southern edges of the King Ranch), it's grazing land, but not the brush-type that shrubbie's always going to the pig farm to clear.

I presume it's similar around Sarita.

other than to say that the delay in reportage and the way the reportage was eventually handled is VEEEERY INTERESTING.

But stupid!

23. The smoking gun has the report
http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/0213061cheney1.html

funny things .... the report was dated 2/13 ..... that would be today
the man who got shot was wearing both a cap & vest

it was checked that neither cheney or the lawyer were under the influence of alcohol
how ever reports are that the local law enforcement was blocked from speaking to cheney.

I hunt and this just not pass the smell test. And Ms. Armstrong who called the story to
a friendly local reporter is very connected to bush & company.
