Ultrametabolism - anybody know anything about it?
Has anyone read this book? What do you think of it?

The idea of boosting your metabolism with the foods you eat is intriguing to me.



Physician Hyman (Ultra-Prevention: The 6 Week Plan That Will Make You Healthy for Life) delivers plenty of scientifically grounded information about weight loss myths, effective individualized strategies centered around the theme of stoking metabolism and a detailed six-week plan—complete with menus and recipes—that "will help you lose 11 to 21 pounds" in those first six weeks. The data and prescription the author provides are far from simple, and results, if attained, are not automatic. But dogged readers will come away from the book with a thorough understanding of dieting principles, such as the timing of meals, portion size, glycemic load, phytonutrient index, the weight loss benefits of relaxation and the optimized functioning of the thyroid. There are straightforward principles buried in the text, such as "eat fruits and vegetables" and "move your body," plus tips for eating out (e.g., "don't be afraid to ask for substitutions in a dish," "request a 'crudités platter'... instead of the breadbasket" and "order a light drink"); adhering to these tips alone should prove beneficial. The opportunity for readers to remember and apply any of the more involved information is a possible positive side effect.

2. I haven't read the book, but you can definitely hype your metabolism...
through diet and exercise. Try out something like Oxygen Magazine (fitness mag for women) or Flex and you will find info about "clean" eating, which helps raise your metabolism.

As far as exercise, the number one thing you can do is lift weight, and lift heavy weights--muscle requires more calories to function, so you burn more calories at rest if you carry more muscle. It's awesome :).

4. Unfortunately, not allowed to lift heavy weights
with any regularity. I have defective heart valves. :-( You're right, it is good exercise and if it could, it would be my main activity, moreso than aerobics.

I can and do use regular 5 and 10 lb weights though. :-)

6. I'm sorry--that sucks...
but do what you can :). Due to your medical issue, 5-10 lbs is lifting heavy for you--maybe not for someone else, but it is for you.

For me, a 75 pound bench press is lifting heavy--for a 200 lb male who trains regularly, it would be a warm-up--so it's all relative :).

7. i read a bit on "clean eating"
they say soy and tofu are not good. i thought that was interesting since most people i know into health and fitness drink and eat those things regularly.

3. Dr. Hyman has been having a 2 hr program on PBS recently...
but I only watched the first few minutes. I couldn't tell if it was an 'infomercial' or what. It didn't really look to be the usual PBS quality programming. But yet it wasn't on in the middle of the night. They have played it repeatedly here. So I'm sure it will be on again soon.
