All-Women Radio Talk Network - Found this in GD

Fonda, Steinem Launch All-Women Radio Talk Network

September 13, 2006 1:55 p.m. EST

Julie Farby - All Headline News Staff Writer

New York, NY (AHN)- Greenstone Media, a radio company whose founders include social activist Gloria Steinem and actress Jane Fonda, has launched an all-women, all-talk network across the United States.

The network, which is run by women, aims to provide an alternative to current radio talk, which Steinem describes as "very argumentative, quite hostile, and very much male-dominated."

In an interview with Reuters, Steinem says, this network "has a different spirit. It has more community. It's more about information, about humor, about respect for different points of view and not constant arguing."

But, chief executive officer of Greenstone, Susan Ness, hopes the company will attract male listeners, saying "We do have male voices on the network. It's much better to have a mixture of voices."

Steinem pointed out that the idea of an all-women network stemmed from a company survey showing an 18 percent decrease in female listeners over the past seven years, telling Reuters, "Women are really fleeing from AM talk radio and now FM music because people get their music in different ways. So there's an enormous window of opportunity, and we're diving in."

After all, glaciers are melting, costs are rising, children are growing - there's a lot to talk about! We’re about connection, community and fun, and we invite you to be part of the conversation.

Talk. Listen. Connect.

You can download and listen to previous broadcasts. (There's a joke in there about "broad"casts and I just went there)

1. Think they can get an interview with Germaine Greer?
(I'm reading "The Whole Woman" right now)
I don't listen to talk radio, but I might support this concept. With Ms. Steinman involved, I can assume It won't turn into an "O" magazine type with diet, make-up and childrearing tips.

The reason I don't listen to talk radio is I don't like it. It annoys the hell out of me. And it annoys me probably because of the lack of debate, or even exchange of ideas. Male dominated to say the least. I can practically smell the testosterone burning. A lot of rudeness. If I want rudeness I'll go drive in rush hour with the radio off. I have to be fair and say my first impression besides inane FM radio music hosts was Limbaugh. Probably ruined what came after for me.

Maybe it's improved, I don't know. I have friends who get most of their information from it. I do like this idea, though, so I'll give it a try.

2. From their web site, it looks as tho they're addressing the very
things you listed about why you don't like talk radio; which align with exactly why I don't like talk radio. :D

So maybe it will be more reasoned debate rather than pissing and shouting contests. The bit I've listened to so far seems to indicate such.

I bet they're new enough in their enterprise they might give your suggestion some consideration if you were to send it off to them. Maybe? Possibly? Can't hurt to ask. :D

5. I heard Gloria talk about this on Bill Maher...!
Can you believe that? He seemed to want her to plug it, the way he brought it up and allowed her to talk about it when she was a panelist on last week's show. I was very excited and pulled up the link right away!

I just sent the link about it to a DU buddy tonight, and realized I hadn't shared about it here...so happy to see someone beat me to it! :D

As soon as I can get some free time, I'm looking forward to streaming it on my 'puter. :hi:

Isn't this exciting?
