There was a very good New York Times editorial yesterday that criticizes the consistent efforts of Congress and state governments to discourage voting. The editorial is part of the New York Times paid subscription page so I will only excerpt from it here.
The Times laments:
(T)hree techniques - discouraging registration drives, purging eligible voters and imposing unreasonable ID requirements - keep showing up...
Protecting the integrity of voting is important, but many of these rules seem motivated by a partisan desire to suppress the vote, and particular kinds of voters, rather than to make sure that those who are entitled to vote - and only those who are entitled - do so.
Of course, Congress is about to reauthorize the Voting Rights Act and this will have a profound impact on our future elections. We have so much ground to cover to protect voters and this is the crucial starting point.
I have learned from BradBlog that Robert Kennedy Jr. has a story in Rolling Stone that he is writing on Diebold and voting machines that will publish online tomorrow and in print form on Friday. I spoke with him awhile back as he was getting started in his investigation. He has been at this for several months and I am looking forward to what he has uncovered.http://www.conyersblog.us/default.htmhttp://www.bradblog.com/archives/00002891.htm
