One of the state’s largest gun retailers chose not to appeal the revocation of its gun license and has stopped selling firearms, the store’s attorney said Friday.
Trader Sports in San Leandro stopped selling guns at the close of business Friday, but will continue selling camping, fishing and other sporting goods, attorney Malcolm Segal said.
The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives revoked the store’s gun license after finding bookkeeping problems that authorities said could have hindered police investigation of gun crimes and endangered public safety. The agency said store owner Tony Cucchiara could not account for 1,723 guns.
A little less than a month ago, we were shocked that the ATF couldn’t get this place shut down. They were selling a crime gun at “nearly a rate of one per day,” and yet because of all the red tape the NRA has built into the system, the ATF couldn’t get guns off of their shelves. But it looks like the recent actions of Michael Bloomberg and others working against illegal guns are having an effect: guns are off of Trader Sports’ shelves for good!
The ATF will decide whether the store may sell its remaining firearms inventory to other licensed dealers, Segal said. The inventory includes 500 to 700 guns worth about $500,000.
Trader Sports, which has operated on East 14th Street for more than 35 years, sold more than 3,500 weapons a year.
If we had our way, we’d make sure those guns see the inside of a furnace, but as long as they’re out of Trader Sports’ hands, it’s that much less likely they’ll see the hands of criminals. That’s 3,500 less weapons per year on California’s streets. Trader Sports is the second worst gun dealer for crime guns in the country.
