The Culture of Vengeance is Alive and Well in the US
Edited on Thu Jun-08-06 11:26 AM by JCMach1
Sorry, but I refuse to celebrate anyone's death. Our government, the media, and a large volume of the population continue perpetuating the kind of culture that cheers executions.

That's the force that drove Americans to support the Iraq war in the first place (their misguided belief that Saddam supported 9/11).

Sorry, but I'm not part of that culture of death...

Leave me out of it!

To quote Tolkien from the Lord of the Rings:

“Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends.”

1. Same here.
It was impossible to capture them, I suppose.

2. But he took all of those babies out of incubators!
And tricked the GIs into murdering those people in Hadithia!

3. Me too
I don't care who it is, I don't celebrate anyone's death by dancing around screaming "Let the bodies hit the floor! Let the bodies hit the floor!"

4. In America
sex is bad and violence is good. Never has made any sense to me.

Even though it's a daily occurrence, I continue to find it shocking how even the "progressives" on DU and elsewhere immediately turn to the primitive Old Testamant values of venegence when it suits them.

"'X' is evil, so he should die."

"I hope 'Y' gets raped in prison."

"I think 'Z''s alleged offensives warrant his execution, even without a trial."

6. I think it is, perhaps, human nature
because I feel it as well.

Or maybe I'm just a sociopath. Hard to tell.

10. Exactly. It is human nature...
But it's also human nature to murder and to take whatever we want by force.

The whole point of civilization, in my opinion, it to create a world where we rise above these atavistic urges.

13. My all-time favorite line from any movie:
"Human nature, Mister Allnut, is what we are put upon this earth to rise above."

(And didn't Kate deliver it splendidly?)

nostalgically,
Bright

14. Yep. Concur one hundred percent.
Unfortunately, this is yet one more thing that has caused a split among DU'ers.
