But first - believe me when I say, I hear (and feel deeply) what you mean insofar as your "outrage fatigue" is concerned. I feel tired and scared a lot of the time. And I've seen a certain number of my friends - who just a few years ago were way more political than me - fall into despair and/or disinterest.
At the same time, I sense the tide is turning. I sense a shift in the general mood of our country and even of our mainstream press. Granted, it might be slight - but in these turbulent times, where seemingly EVERY nook and cranny of corporate media has been bought and paid for, even a slight shift counts for more than it ever has, to my mind. And we all know what a small snowball rolling downhill can 'cause...
And, by the way (in case you're wondering), I do have evidence of the (to some) outrageously positive claims I just made above. So here are some of the bits and pieces - the "snowballs" I suppose - that make up what I hope is an ever-growing avalanche of change in our once-great nation:
First, the fact that Stephen Colbert's Bush-eviscerating Press Corps dinner speech made such an enormous splash in the world of electronic media. Last time I checked, it was STILL in the top ten "albums" on ITunes. This shows me that there is ever greater demand in this land for the truth, and not mere truthiness. I sense a country that is almost STARVING for it. (And, although the media being asleep at the switch is certainly upsetting, the fact that we can fill that void and deliver that truth makes our roles more vital than ever - which can be tiring, to be sure, but which also can be an amazing opportunity. I mean, you just posting your words has inspired me to reply, which might help someone else in turn, etc etc - every bit counts!)
Second, the FRONT PAGE Rolling Stone RFK Jr. cover story about the 2004 election theft. A story that has, I might add, gained some traction in the MSM since it was published (which is something that was UNTHINKABLE mere weeks ago).
Third, tragic though it certainly is, the fact that events at Haditha are finally coming to light - having happened in November, mind you - and the incident is being widely dicussed. The fact that the coverup was unsuccessful and that blame is seeming to capillary-action higher up the command chain (not high enough, of course, but higher) than it was for the "bad apples" of Abu Ghraib also gives me hope and helps me cope.
Fourth, the increasing number of people (especially the retired Generals) calling for Rumsfeld's dismissal (or worse).
Fifth, the fact that Ann Coulter has out and out horrified the nation with comments about the 9/11 widows. Spin though they may, I have a hard time believing the corporate media can frame her exchange with Matt Lauer in ANY way that doesn't come off as gut-wrenchingly shameless and/or shameful (or, dare I say, godless). And the fact that Rahm Emmanuel called the Republicans out on it and the fact that some Repug commentators (like the Mad Matalin) are actually DEFENDING her can only paint the Republican party as a whole with a very soiled brush. (Plus, people are talking about (and listening to) the Jersey Girls again!)
Sixth, Al Gore's inspiring and informative film is - FOR THE SECOND WEEK - the highest grossing movie of any playing in the US. Take that X-MEN!
So (have I bored you yet?) even though I am more fatigued than I have ever felt, having to fight through this constant barrage of BS every day, I am actually (and possibly foolishly) optimistic that things might just be shifting toward a more positive outcome.
(And please, everyone, feel free to add to my list of positive "snowballs" above!)
Lastly, I wanna agree with everyone in this thread who advocates taking a little break from it all - by your account it sounds like you immerse yourself more fully in world events info than most people do, and whereas that once may not have been problematic, these days with the sheer density of toxicity in the air (both politically and environmentally) you're problably getting WAY more of the USRDA in propagandic info-poison than is healthy!
So take a break, pace yourself, and try and stop and smell the roses whenever and wherever you can. Sure it's hard these days, but that's why it's more important now than ever. Peace, my friend! :pals:
ETA: Whew - my post tired ME out, heh! So I'm gonna go night night now, but I'll see you in this thread first thing tomorrow!
