Beer Ingredient May Inhibit Prostate Cancer, But There's a Catch
PORTLAND, OREGON (AP) -- Researchers at Oregon State University say an ingredient in beer appears to help prevent prostate cancer, at least in lab experiments. But there's a catch. You'd theoretically have to drink about 17 beers a day for any potential benefit.

1. Beer and Coffee...
Study Suggests Caffeine Can Help Liver

Reuters
Monday, December 5, 2005; A06

Coffee and tea may reduce the risk of serious liver damage in people who drink too much alcohol, are overweight or have too much iron in the blood, researchers reported yesterday.

The study of nearly 10,000 people showed that those who drank more than two cups of coffee or tea per day developed chronic liver disease at half the rate of those who drank less than one cup each day.

The study, conducted by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases and Social & Scientific Systems Inc., found that coffee provided no protection to people at risk of liver disease from other causes, such as viral infections.

My ex was an out-of-control alcoholic for decades. She drank quantities of alcohol every day that would have crushed me (and often did, when I was drinking with her). She did this for 30 years-- my health began to suffer after fewer than 10, and I was a moderate drinker compared to her. She drank booze by the half gallon. Half a liter or more of rum or vodka a day, most days. For decades.

When we split she was arguably in better health than me. It had only begun to show on her during the last few years, in her 50's, and not that much.

She also drank at least two pots of coffee a day and a quart or two of iced tea, brewed strong enough to take paint off. She was always on the lookout for 32 oz or bigger glasses to hold the stuff.

Oh, and she smoked a pack and a half of cigarettes every day, too. She was a machine. I simply don't understand it. Maybe there is something to that caffeine story.

8. Alcohol. caffiene, and, soon I hope nicotine.
I'm 2/3 the way toward a healthy lifestyle so far. Just waiting for the last food group to show up. Oh, chocolate needs to be added -- that would put me at 3/4.

16. 17 beers a day is no problem...but it's a MOOT point.
Anyone drinking more than 17 beers every day is
gonna be dead LONG before their prostate tumor
becomes an issue.

17. So, uhhhhh... What's the catch?
Beer, coffee, ciggybutts, and triple-pepperoni pizza (God's Perfect Food). I figure I'll live forever.

"You plan to live forever, huh? How's it going?"

"So far, so good..."
