Why is there not a Congressional investigation of this?

Military contractors make billions on the front line

Private military contractors are earning billions of dollars in Iraq -- much of it from U.S. taxpayers. The government says it cannot provide a total amount for the contracts -- many of which are secret -- but industry experts estimate Iraq's security business costs tens of billions of dollars.

1. Because the people who control Congress are the same people
Edited on Tue Jun-13-06 06:03 AM by lindisfarne
who will benefit down the line from these contracts. How many will get a job at a Halliburton- associated corporation after leaving congress, or get a job in a think-tank that's funded by folks friendly with Halliburton (or by Halliburton itself, or its board of directors, etc.), or a job as a lobbyist?

2. Because their silence is bought?
We know that generous no-bid contracts have been handed out by this administration since the war began, with no oversight. In fact anyone who tried to apply the usual oversight was sent packing; witness Bunny Greenhouse.

The silence from Congress on this matter is deafening...but it's no different than on any other matter involving the expenditure of huge sums of taxpayer money since Bush** started his squat in the WH.

3. Because Congress is too busy with more important
matters like wine tasting. http://www.heraldnet.com/stories/06/06/04/100tra_tl7congress001.cfm

This is the laziest Congress since 1948. Did you really think people who routinely lie, cheat and steal would actually do some work?

4. "...government says it cannot provide a total amount
for the contracts..."

It's taxpayer money, isn't it? What's the problem?

If our Founding Fathers were to come to the seat of power today, they would be shocked and angry about most things, but this war profiteering crap would really outrage them.

5. It's because with the repubs controlling Congress
We have zero subpoena power so we can't investigate crimes like this.

6. Re: Military Contracts....
*Sigh*...

The sad fact of life is that GWB and the extremist religious right (I can't call them Republicans as they don't fit the conservative Republican agenda they have to be classified as something new and scary.) has so bleeping much power and is allowed to run unchecked as well as being able to actively brag about treasonous activities that the lesser things don't even make the radar scope anymore.

I can only dream of the day when this country will be returned to it's populous and held accountable by it's populous. However there are a number of things that are preventing this from happening:
-Public Schools not teaching learning skills but rote memorization and the 'Every Child Left Behind' program
-Christianity teaching that we should not have pride in ourselves
-Corporate control of our media and news

In any case if you want these contracts investigated you have to find a news agency that does not have connections to the contracts in question but since the media corps own so much of America we have to ask more why would they want to shed light on this problem?

8. We all just take it as a sad fact of life.
We should all be outraged and the public should be taking the government to task for this.
We are the country who threw the British a Tea Party over taxes, but we now have become too lazy to even question the government and we excuse it because it is the republicans fault.

When will the people have had enough, and take to the streets over this raping of America? Other nations would not stand for this bull and they are much less free than we claim to be.

7. A. Because thier stock portfolios are laden with shares from these same
companies.

B. If they say something untoward, Karl Rove will out them for cheating on their wives, or for looking too longingly at a pet goat, or for being Communists (or, Rove will just have them killed)
