Evangelical apocalyptic schlockfest 'snoops' on gamers

Spyware Revelations
By Chris Williams
Published Friday 23rd June 2006 13:56 GMT

Watchers of right-wing Christian groups in the States say a new apocalyptic videogame released by cultish Revelations-based fiction series Left Behind is riddled with spyware.
Developers have incorporated software from an Israeli firm called Double Fusion. It incorporates video advertising and product placement into the game, and reportedly records players' behaviour, location, and other data to be uploaded to Left Behind's Bible-powered marketing machine.
Aimed at 13 to 34-year-old males, Left Behind: Eternal Forces casts the player as a director of God's Earthly militia, left behind in the Rapture to roam the streets of New York, battling Satan's minions and shooting unbelievers.
(snip)
The United Nations, already organ of satanic machinations for many on the Christian far-right, features strongly in the game. Goat-footed demons reportedly emerge from UN peacekeeping humvees.
One reviewer noted: "The only way to accomplish anything positive in the game is to 'convert' nonbelievers into faithful believers, and the only alternative to this is outright killing them."®

I don't know whether to laugh or cry...

I thought the killing of non-believers was up to the Big Guy at the end...isn't the game's premise almost heretical then??

:puke:

4. Since it's based off of those godawful books in the "left behind"series...
I'm positive. Of course most rational people know that fundamentalism in any doctrine is dangerous, especially when it is the basis of foreign policy decisions...But I digress...read the OT, or the book of revelation and the violence inherant in Christianity is pretty friggin clear!

11. Dammit! Those are not Christian books!
Christian fundamentalists seems to be the guys who ignore the Christian teachings and rush headlong into pre-Christian. Now, MY people know how to treat the OT...we don't get excited, except when David wins. And we spend a lot of time with the Song of Solomon because WE know it has nothing to do with Christ and his Church. Very lascivious book, the OT. Gotta know how to read it.

12. I probably didn't make my point clear enough (Nyquil ya know)...
The left behind books are "christian" loosely, but much of the imagery etc. they use is from the apocolyptic style of some of the OT. They try to have it both ways by combining the most violent imagery of the OT and NT, out of context and with no historical reference points...

16. There's not much of a difference between the two.
There's plenty of "Christian" fundamentalists in this country that would kill "non-believers." I'll trust the average Muslim before a fundie.

1. I didn't think the game was even OUT yet
I hear that in the game, you even have to kill fellow Christians who oppose the invasion of Iraq and actually think a woman should make her own decisions about health care without a priest getting involved.

So is this an on-line game, or do you have to buy it at a religious book store?

5. I can't decide...
...If I'm surprised, or not surprised. I used to live in rural Utah, and I'm sure a lot of people I knew back there love this game.

6. I'm going to go have a glass of wine now and pretend I didn't read the OP
I've read bad novels with plot elements like that one. Now I'm trapped in one. (head explodes)

7. They roam the streets of New York?
If they're so holy, why didn't they go to heaven in the rapture?
