Tweety: The Crescent is a Frankenstein’s Monster (video_
Matthews: Two years ago, King Abdullah of Jordan warned me of what was coming in the Mideast. His prediction was dead on. He spoke of his fears and what the United States was doing in Iraq, toppling one government, electing another, was creating what he called a Shi’a crescent, from Tehran through Baghdad to Beirut that threatened to dominate the Arab world, challenging modern Sunni governments in Egypt and Saudi Arabia and others with an axis of Shi’a power based in Iran.

When I look at the map today, that Shi’a crescent the King foretold has come to light. It is hard for us westerners to understand the internal politics of another region when we can’t predict whether the Democrats will take Congress from the Republicans three months from now. How could we see the Shi’a grabbing the high ground from the Sunni in the Mideast three years ago? That’s what happened. We converted Iraq from a country which has fought revolutionary Iran for eight years to a bloody standstill to a Shi-a-dominated ally of Iran and created a boulevard of common religion and common regional politics.

Did you hear the new Iraqi leader take sides with Hezbollah in a struggle with Israel? This is the emerging threat, not just to the moderate Sunni countries including Egypt and Jordan, who formed and honored treaties to Israel and us. Our brave soldiers have fought, died and been dismembered in Iraq only to connect the disparate pieces of Shi’a radicalism into a Frankenstein’s monster that has come to life right there on our TV screens and worse yet, in the vicarious Mideast where young Arabs found a hero named Hezbollah…

but Farrakhan had also predicted this scenario after we invaded Iraq. Yes, he's an antisemitic joke, but even his prediction came to pass. Many in the Islamic world and ME leaders already knew what was coming. Many of us Americans were so gung ho over this war that we would narry listen...

4. Not you, but
many people do. The "you" was general, not directed at any specific person...

Bottom line, many people in the Eastern world predicted the chaos that has ensued over there, but in our nationalistic hubris, many of us weren't attuned to what was to come.

3. Baron Frankenstein created a monster he couldn't control,
and didn't even try. Perfect analogy.

5. Nice try, Tweety, but...
Shi'ism isn't some monolithic monster the way Chris Matthews is fantasizing. That's just smoke and noise from uberconservative royalist Sunnis like Abdallah, who are willing to oppress their own people so long as they're the ones who stay on top.

After the loony Wahhabists like al-Qaeda and the Taliban (both conservative Sunni sects, by the way) became the biggest threat in the Middle East, Iran should have become our diplomatic ally. I'm not fan of Iran's theology, but it is a stable democracy and has a vested interest in keeping the region calm and progressing toward economic propserity. In fact, after 9-11 Iran helped us with intel in tracking down the Talibani in Afghanistan. We rewarded them with Axis of Evil status--one of the biggest backstabs in the Bush administration and one which, today, is feuling Iran's intransigence on its nuke program and on its support of Hezbollah terrorists.

Tweety's helping out with the drum beat because fear helps the Republicans cling to power with their boney old fingers. There is, of course, no way for us to go to war with Iran--anyone with any insight into US power understands that. But that won't stop the Bushies from using the fear of Iran to scare voters into sucking down their poison one more time. Matthews, like a good pirate's shoulder parrot, is of course only along for the ride.
