I just read the attack on Ehud Olmert which Krauthammer published in Friday's Washington Post. In it Charles Krauthammer excoriates Olmert for losing sleep over the Lebanon war and, primarily, for fighting it "on the cheap."

Krauthammer writes that the Bush Administration "has gone far out on a limb to allow Israel to win...It has counted on Israel's ability to do the job. It has been disappointed. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has provided unsteady and uncertain leadership.... Divisive cabinet debates are broadcast to the world, as was Olmert's own complaint that 'I'm tired. I didn't sleep at all last night.' (Haaretz, July 28). Hardly the stuff to instill Churchillian confidence."

Krauthammer continues: "His (Olmert's) search for victory on the cheap has jeopardized not just the Lebanon operation but America's confidence in Israel as well. That confidence -- and the relationship it reinforces -- is as important to Israel's survival as its own army. The tremulous Olmert seems not to have a clue."

Krauthammer is not alone in his anger at the Israeli PM for not fighting hard enough. Such other brave warriors as Newt Gingrich and Bill Kristol have also attacked Olmert for his reticence about sending Israeli soldiers into ground combat.

Lay aside, for the purposes of this argument, the destruction this war has delivered to Lebanon. Krauthammer has never in his career expressed a word of sympathy for an Arab, anywhere. He hates them all. For him, the only good part of this war is the damage done to Lebanon.

When I read the comments about "providing unsteady and uncertain leadership" and "searching for victory on the cheap", I thought he was talking about Bush and Iraq.

But then I got to the line "I'm tired. I didn't sleep at all last night", and realized it couldn't be Bush. He's never worked hard enough at anything in his life to be 'tired', and we all know he sleeps like a baby while other people are dying.

10. We should note the fellow writing this is a former staffer for AIPAC,

and still MJ Rosenberg sounds much saner than not only Bush, but most Democrats as well.

That is political suicide. It must be a mindblower to go through the contortions of logic necessary to express support for Israel. Who can I even take seriously out there in Politicland?

15. Not "opposing Israel" but opposing specific policies, which are then

called "opposing Israel". Or questioning unconditional US aid to Israel. (and with the implication of opposing Jewish people).

However, it is no more "opposing Israel" than opposing Bush's war in Iraq is "opposing the United States". Bush and his supporters would say otherwise.
