Top 10 Miss Amerika Contestants, RWers
Edited on Sat Jan-21-06 11:45 PM by Dinger
Couldn't find the list, but I saw the show at the beginning, and here are the winners that I can remember:

D.C.
Arkansas
Alabama
Oklahoma
Texas
Florida
Georgia
Pennsylvania
Virginia
10= ? South Carolina (on edit)

I didn't watch after that. When I did a search on Google, there were several results that had "new" and "Wholesone" included. Maybe they were worried about comments someone from New York, Massacussetts, Maine, etc. might say. The host made a big deal about none of the first few 10 being west of the Mississippi, when it was obvious he meant Mason-Dixon Line. What do you think? And no, I didn't watch after that.

2. Didn't know they still had that stuff.
Do they still bother televising, or do they just sell tickets to parents of contestants and dirty old men who couldn't become judges?

3. They didn't say much at all actually

It was an old-fashioned kind of pageant. The winner is a nice girl and rather artsy.
I've never heard her express much about politics at all.

4. Please. These women could spend all that money
It takes to enter all these pageants and go to school, or buy a house, or feed hungry children.

ick! imho

10. Or perhaps this is a way to make money
for school because your dad lost his job and it pays big scholarship money.

13. I doubt it.
I grew up with a few of these girls (well, same type). From the time they were 6 or so, their parents put themselves in hock buying dresses and paying entry fees and the costs of getting to the pageants. You don't just decide one day to enter Miss Amerika on a whim... you have to go through YEARS of smaller pageants to get that far... and it costs LOTS of money.

Not to mention the hours and hours spent learning how to "look good" and "walk correctly" that could be better spent learning something useful.

Maybe I'm just biased because all the girls I knew that were into this were so vacuous and obsessed with their appearance that I couldn't stand being around them.

15. I know the winner
She is a nice girl and she has used the money to go to school. Her parents are not well off. I tried to be subtle about my relationship, but I just don't want any DUer saying bad things about her.
She has been taking ballet at my school since she was 8 and one of my employees went with her to Las Vegas as her coach. All the parents at my school pitched in to help pay the teachers way. It was a thrilling night for all of us. I sure don't want my fellow Democrats to be too judgmental.

20. How many pageants did she have to go through to get there?
I'm wondering, now that I'm thinking off those girls I knew, and how most of them never got farther than regional. Maybe she's made of tougher stuff. :)

24. Several
Fortunately she won 2nd in several and it paid enough scholarship and she got to enter it again.
Normally I don't like this type of thing, but it has all been an eye-opener to me.
Raised my consciousness, as we used to say back in the 60's

29. I'm glad she's getting something good out of it.
Sounds like she's the exception to the rule; however, it doesn't change my opinion about the pageants in general. Fluff and nonsense, usually.

5. The host is Southern and this is on CMT, so it's not a surprise that
he's casually mentioning all the Southerners. Don't read too much into it; he's a proud Nashville native.

6. Top 10 is almost always all southerners
#10 is probably Mississippi or Tennessee or South Carolina.

Doesn't necessarily mean they are right-wingers, though. I think I heard that Diedra Downs was not a big Bush fan.

9. 'Why did you wear those horrid glasses?'
Berry said she looked much different in sixth grade: "I had big huge glasses, frizzy hair and I was about 5-foot-8. And I remember being in music class and a girl came up to me and said, 'Why did you have that picture taken with those horrid glasses?'"

She said she was "heartbroken" by the comment, but that it ultimately helped her "become the woman that I am by accepting the person that I am."

14. She obviously got rid of the glasses and straightened her hair,
so I'm not sure what her point was regarding self-acceptance.

I imagine it takes a great deal of self confidence to do beauty pagents. Maybe that's what she meant.

16. On what are you basing this?

Even if you're trying to make some sort of prejudicial comment about people from certain states, I still don't see it. I mean, there's DC and Pennsylvania in there.

Now, they may well be RW-ers, but I'm not seeing where you're arriving at that conclusion here.

A Clarkie gets a LOT of leverage w/ me. ;)

I assumed that's what you meant, and I thought it was weird there wasn't a single top 10 contestant from west of the rockies.

31. Arkansas, Oklahoma, and possibly Pennsylvania are the anomalies.
The rest are the usual suspects.
