TX Katrina emails: Perry worried re: image; Delay: "protect Houston"
http://chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metropolitan/3603552.html

"Question between you and I," Perry's communications director, Eric Bearse, wrote Sept. 1, "at what point do we go from being compassionate to being taken advantage of (meaning, are they sending us folks they don't want?). Please erase when done reading."

<snip>

"I have real concern developing about lawlessness breaking out in Texas as a result of our generosity," Walt wrote. "We need to make certain we do not exceed our ability to provide necessities for those we are agreeing to take. What's the plan for those who see the Astrodome as their rightful home for the next 90 days? What's the plan for handling increase in prison/jail population?"

DeLay apparently shared that concern. On Sept. 2, Wilson wrote McCraw and Perry staff that someone with the Sugar Land Republican's office called, wanting to know whether Perry planned to call the National Guard to "protect Houston" from what was happening in New Orleans.

"Houston or any other city in Texas will not turn into a (New Orleans). Thanks," McCraw wrote. "DeLay's office called again," Wilson wrote 18 minutes later. This time, DeLay's staff said the city of Houston was asking for the Guard to patrol the perimeter of Reliant Park and the George R. Brown Convention Center and to provide logistics support.

The only thing they give a shit about is property and protecting their property from those scary black people from New Orleans. What a bunch of bigots.

14. Perry saw this disaster like chimp saw 9/11
Looking at it as a "how can I make myself look good" kind of moment. Especially with 2006 election right around the corner. No doubt that all of his re-election commercials will be with the evacuees being used as props (learned from chimp). Bet those running against him are loving these emails.

Same link:

Bearse wrote that even though the Texas Transportation Department already was assisting in Katrina preparedness, it "may make sense" for the governor to send Williamson a letter requesting assistance because Williamson "wants the gov. to get credit for directing their actions vs. the agency just doing it."

2. Damn
I must be naive and foolish afterall.

How can anyone think of people in these terms? Especially people in a time of crisis - who have lost everything?

How do you just turn your heart off?

4. They're not "their" kind of people
Gee Solly mack, get with the program. If they'd all be able to flee the city with their platinum Visa card and check into the Galleria four seasons, then they would have been welcomed with open arms and invited to stay. As it is they suggested they would be more comfortable up the road in Austin, it's a Democratic town, after all.

5. The heart turns off the day you get
multiple trips from lobbyists, meals that cost more than (sic) a meager $20 (lol), golf outings, campaign donations, etc etc etc.

12. They have hearts and they are human - that's what makes it so scary
so chilling.

Stripped of all hyperbole and rhetoric - evil is banal. Always has been. Always will be.

7. And knowingly
As witnessed by Bearse's request that the recipient of his email ERASE it.

I actually gasped when I read this. Not that I didn't suspect it but to actually see it being reported in print is quite another thing.

8. What a bunch of BIGOTS! This makes me SICK!
Fascist Peter, C-SPAN's WJ host, read the article these emails came from and when he got to these DISGUSTING emails...HE STOPPED READING. Fascist bastard. THIS IS THE REPUKE PARTY. They portray themselves as Christian, G-d fearing, compassionate people and they are just the opposite. I wonder how much of this will make the corporate media? What a bunch of paranoid, sick assholes!

13. DeLay at the Astrodome: "Kids, isn't this kid of fun?"
And what he was really thinking:

"No, I didn't mean fun for you, you little pickaninny. Nobody gives a damn about YOU..."

God, we are soooooo going to run him out of Washington on a rail.
