I've been here at DU for 5 1/2 years now
I've been here since March 2001 and this is my 10,000th post. I found this place in the aftermath of the Great Conservative Revolution of 2000. Those of us that managed to avoid being placed in conservative reeducation camps were looking for somewhere, anywhere to talk about our outrage at a stolen election, the dangers of the future and what we might be able to do about it. One thing we already knew was that Democrats and liberals in general had virtually no online presence.

Prior to DU, discussion boards were solely conservative oriented. But that didn't mean we couldn't have fun. My own first discussion board battles dates to about 1995 and were waged on the old Michael Reagan message board. I had more than my share of real death threats from that board. One guy named "Tailgunner" probably wanted to kill me more than anyone else. I think he's still around over at FR under the name Tailgunner Joe. At least he sounds just as crazy.

The handfull of us that were liberals at Reagan's board all proudly take credit for finally shutting that board down as we disrupted it to the point of complete chaos at times. Ah, the good old days!

Once Reagan's board was shut down in around 1997, most all of the conservatives moved on to Free Republic. But there was still no where for liberals. The effectiveness of these boards was demonstrated very pointedly in late November 2000, during the Florida debacle, when CNN had an online poll asking if Gore should concede. That was pretty much when "freeping" a poll became common vernacular as the freepers did their job on the poll and greatly skewed the numbers against Gore. What is significant about this is that traitor Bob Novak made a very big deal about the fact that the numbers said overwhelmingly that Gore should concede and everyone else on CNN started running with it as if it was an accurate poll.

So by the time we all were finding DU, it was painfully obvious that there was a great deal of power in having a common meeting place for like-minded people.

By November 2002, we all thought we were really onto something with DU and were thinking we could all make a difference collectively in that off year election. As the results came in on election night, the collective anguish here at DU was unbearable and the server response was probably the slowest its ever been.

Things got progressively worse in our country and in early 2004 we all thought our primary candidate was better than anyone else's. Thus began the Great DU Primary Gang Wars where your avatar was your gang color. Everyone else was the enemy!

And by 2004, liberal blogs were commonplace. Liberals now had a solid Internet presence and were on every bit an equal footing as any conservative gathering place. The Internet activism by 2004 was astounding and probably is a major reason for the record turnout in November 2004.

By 2004, we knew all about Black Box voting because of DU. Bev Harris (like her or not) was a regular here. She and others pushed the BBV issue to the forefront and DU was one of the primary go-to places for BBV info. Nevertheless, another election was stolen and the Great Conservative Revolution of 2000 continues.

Now, here we are in the latter part of another election year and we are better prepared than ever before. 10 years ago liberals were no where to be found on the Internet. Now, threads like this one from EarlG about the Untitled History Project and the farce ABC mockudrama underscores the power of what we all can do collectively. By this coming Monday night, Google bombs organized through liberal Internet blogs and boards will set the record straight on what really happened before 9/11.

Skinner, Elad and EarlG, you guys are the greatest. When the history of all this is written, you guys will be the ones people will credit for first bringing liberals together. I think everyone else is in some ways copycats. Yes, even the bloggers with their comments sections. You guys were the first out there. You were the best and are still getting better. Who'da thunk it?

Anyway, I'm getting off of my soapbox now. I didn't intend to get this longwinded, but it took me 5 1/2 years to get to 10,000 when some people do it in 6 months. I don't have spare time like that, but I sure do enjoy this place.

fight and I appreciate you having been there this whole time helping it from the start. DU is literally a part of me now, and that's after only a year of posting and a year prior to that of lurking. It has opened up my eyes to things I never before would have known and educated me in so many ways. It couldn't do that for me if it wasn't for posters like you who have helped make it what it is.

Here's to another 10,000 for ya GMAN. God Bless DU.

25. Sorry, don't buy it!
Again, when D.U. started, we were just pissed off over a coup de ta and a stolen election. We had no idea how bad it would get in the following years! An outrage a day! A stolen civil liberty a day! Disney contributing $40,000,000,000.00 in campaign contributions with no accountability. Fuck that, I'm buying guns!

71. Did you miss a decimal point on that #
Never go to a Saturday night gun fight armed with only a pocket knife. Yea, I feel your frustration and do not disagree with people owning firearms as long as they well trained and knowledgeable about their practicalities and uses. To me weapons are tools with a zero sum gain in most instances. As a mechanic that has personally tens of thousands dollars on all kinds of tools for my trade I would tell you the knowledge about the application of them tools is far more valuable than what they cost. That is to say if you want to be ahead of the game invest in knowledge.

I would also say that the investment in knowledge of what firearms are and are not might take you to owning some or several. The idea that firearms are the panacea to being one step ahead of anything seems to me foolishness at best. A policeman's weapons are mostly carried for the policeman's own protection and if those weapons are being used for anything than the policeman has more or less failed at their assigned task and is headed to the last resort.

My several years here at D.U. has made me knowledgeable about how crude, inept and infantile the U.S. government is. In metaphor, there is massive maggot filled carcass rotting at our front porch and bantering about with flyswatters might solve something but the stench will still be there until the problem is solved and or removed.

You are exactly right. The one fatal flaw in the neo-con plan was that they discounted the internet. They were successful in buying off/intimidating the media into complicity and propaganda--but did not consider the internet. I know they are attempting to fix that error with regulation--but for now we can still find the truth. Imagine, without the internet what they could have gotten away with unanswered.

Congrats on 10,000.

24. I suspect the timing of your post.
Congratulations on that big round number. But something strikes me about your post.

I get a sense that this is also a milestone for the liberal community.

My experience begins somewhere around your last five paragraphs. I'm one of those people who was naive when Bush v. Gore was happening. I watched with fascination as I saw what I thought was democracy playing out. And it didn't sink in until several years later, just what had happened. And I thank you for bringing me up to your level. Very much so.

But what I have seen with the ABC 9/11 presentation tells me that we stopped them dead in their tracks. It feels like we congealed as a community. We all pulled together as a team. For the first time. I get the sense that this is where the game begins. All of the players are out on the field now. Isn't that the milestone that we just passed? The game has only had one team, until now.

26. K&R for Gman!
I've been here since '03 or so and I remember this place being a liberal oasis of sorts.

I was a regular visitor to Bartcop, and the dear departed MediaWhoresOnline (the Horse) and, of course, Buzzflash.

I used to visit DU only for the Top 10 Conservative Idiots, but then noticed these strange, interesting and sometimes obscene comments down the right side of the page.....

That's when I decided to join in.

Ah, the memories and wasted hours.....

Thank you for posting this, I literally feel the same way, albiet I didn't find DU until November of 04, when all hope was lost after that election, I literally didn't know how to explain, or understand how W got re-elected. One of my wife's co-workers recommended this site to me, and the very first post I read, was one from Plaid Addler....and after reading that post, I feel in love with this place.

The more posts I read, the more I realized that I wasn't alone....I'm on a rant, you all ready said it best. Thank you, kicked and recommended...

28. Many thanks to all!
One of the most heartening thing about DU is the enthusiastic youthfulness found here. My youthful enthusiasm has been gone for probably 20 years but I know what it's like. As someone who had a fistfight with my dad over my Impeach Nixon bumpersticker, I know what it's like. Before that I wore a black armband with my ROTC (mandatory at my high school) uniform on the first Vietnam Moratorium day and got suspended. I know the passion you can have for a cause in youth.

Up until a couple of years ago, I was starting to fret that the 20-something crowd didn't care about politics and didn't care about what was happening to working people, the poor, women, the environment or much else. DU in 2004 gave me a lot of peace that when I'm really old and gray there will be a helluva lot of "kids" out there keeping up the fight.

To paraphrase Churchill, never quit. Never, ever give up. Because we are not the rich, we are not the elite we will always be the underdogs. Keep fighting, then pass your values on to your kids and teach them to fight. (As a side note, my 15 year old step-daughter has joined PETA and become a vegetarian. I wonder if her mom and I did too good a job teaching her!)

As Mother Jones said, "Pray for the dead and fight like hell for the living!"

I often wonder about the young people. While there are some who are too busy with their jobs and families and hobbies, I do see some who are energetic and passionate about our causes - healthcare, living wages, education. There is hope, the fight will continue.

good to have you still here, and kicking at 10,000 posts!

I recall the old days of the Horse and Smirking Chimp, sweet memories :)

I'd forgotten how it was back then, but do remember so many condensed, thoughtful posts from people WAY smarter than I, folks who actually FLEW Ken Lay around (DemoTex?), others who I knew had some kind of credentials, a giant liberal think tank oasis in the middle of a vast sea of the uninformed and media suckers (that's about the time in 2000 or so when we formed Takebackthemedia.com) and it was always a treat to post my latest flash work here.

I saw your post the other day and thought, Gman.. hmmm.. sounds familiar :)

37. Congrat's on the 10G! Having watched the metamorphosis of DU...
over the years, I can say DU has moved from a small discussion board comprised of several hundred concerned and like minded people, to a powerhouse of Liberal and Progressive thought.

DU has been mentioned often in MSM and Cable reports, and is no longer considered "fringe". It has been an interesting road traveled, and along the way, we have helped many to become aware of the maniacs that run this nation as if it were some cheap version of Enron, just here to be looted and abused.

As we move into the 2006 Mid-Term, I can see where we've made an impact and helped to create momentum against the neo-con agenda. None of this would have been possible w/o the members of this Board, and the dedication of those members to end this reign of hubris.

I came here to find like minded folks because I thought I'd lose my mind with the freak in chief in office - but by April 2001 it wasn't really that bad yet and I could never even have imagined how bad it would get.

I'm pretty sure I found DU through BuzzFlash - because of the top 10 idiots - and EVERY OTHER site I have found including progressive talk radio spun off from there. If it weren't for places like DU and all the other liberal internets sites including our talk radio shows that are streamed we would have no voice at all. Thank God Al Gore invented the internets and thank God for DU, BuzzFlash and whiterosesociety.org

42. Congratulations from a newbie!
I only found out about this place recently.

Shortly after I joined, the people of the DU organized a huge
demonstration of honor to an old friend, who at age 86 (now)
is still alive and very much kicking you-know-what in Washington.
Her name is Helen Thomas. When I saw that, I knew this was a place
was for me. My job has punishing hours, and I am rarely in the same
country three days in a row, but I check in whenever I can, and my
friends in The Freedom Toast music project do too, as well as plug
their Bush-bashing/Democrat-uplifting CDs in the blog ads.

I wasn't aware of the paucity of progressive sites way back when, but
when I see the black hatred and pure vitriol on the right-wing sites,
with their blind devotion to ideology as opposed to reality, it gives
me relief to know that not only is there a DU, but a DU with so very
many level-headed, bright people who can think for themselves.

I say thanks for sticking around, Gman, thanks for maintaining the DU
Skinner, EarlG and the rest, and thanks to all those who make sure that
there is always something interesting to read here. The Top 10, Nance
Greggs, SOOOOO many. And thanks to all those who haven't yet found the DU,
but will soon, and will ensure that the site stays as interesting as it is now.

As the song goes, "we've only just begun..........."

Strangers on the Right, invading Congress
Strangers on the Right, impeding progress
They'll put up a fight, to liberals like you
Something in their eyes resembles fire
Roe v. Wade's demise is their desire
Cutting down to size those States that still are blue!
Strangers on the Right, to Europeans they are
Strangers on the Right, not seen in eons, they will
Terrorize the left, leave their hopes bereft
Making known their stance today
And taking welfare grants away.......

(From "Sing Along With The Democrats"--better? LOL!!)

52. Yes it has
and I find myself wondering what kind of a place DU will be when we finally do take back Congress and the White House. That will be challenging to all. I'm afraid that once we do prevail, as often happens with liberal groups, everyone will go their separate ways. This seems to happen when we do finally prevail. That's when the infighting really starts (nothing like we see now). Then, come the next election, we're all over the place. I know many here have never experienced that.

The best example I can think of, and you had to be there, but its a lot like what happened here in Texas after we all, unanimously pulled together for Ann Richards in 1990. We won and then everyone went back to their own separate groups that they thought had the very most important issues. When Ann didn't do what a group thought she should be doing, they decided to stay home the for the 1994 election, and they did. I remember saying after meetings how many people were so conspicuous by their absence. Things were aggravated when even Ann's inner circle shut out a lot of those that were most responsible for getting her there in the first place.

The consequences of all of that were completely and totally disastrous in the election of 1994. It can be argued that the infighting that cost Ann her election to that idiot now in the White House was a tremendous turning point in world history. Maybe if Ann had not alienated so many people world history would completely different. (Sounds like I'm blaming Ann? I always felt she was the leader and should have done more to pull things together rather than leave it to her people. Don't get me wrong, Ann is a great lady. I just don't think she completely knew what was going on around her.) I still feel there was absolutely no excuse for people's inaction. But the common feeling was how bad could it be? The Democrats still controlled the legislature and the senate as well as the Lt. Governor position and the Texas governor really is a weak governor. How foolish could anyone be? But there's nothing we can do about that now.

So there are some lessons to be remembered about what not to do when we finally do prevail.

I'll be right here.

We sure as hell will take back Congress.

Point well taken about where we go from there.

50. Well put, indeed, GMAN ! Great to See You, Compadre'
So good to see you once again with the added bonus of seeing the screen names of so many from the Early Days; Warriors All;still here, hangin tough and standing strong. Serious folks, all.

I recall very fondly Ramsey and Lynne organizing the first Big Meet-up in Philly, where I met Will Pitt and the late, great Kheph. The next year those Philly Girls, Ramsey & Lynne outdid themselves with a Springtime Meet-up at Doobies Bar, where I befriended the Great "MaineMary",a DUer who was a State Rep in Maine: truly "Walking the walk". Sadly, her name is on a DU tombstone today.

I agree,GMAN, that the Great Flame Wars of '04 were a turning point-Skinner suspended me 3 times, and my ignore list rose into the 70's. You would've expected more from a lecturer in Poli Sci ? Cyber-"Tough Guys" and Anonymous A$$wipes drove me up a wall. I have never treated DU the same, but,I digress

You are one of the Hall of Famers, GMAN. You're up there with Pitt,Crewleader,Kheph,The Magistrate, and new superstars, like young Ava.

I had one of those bumper stickers..mine read, "Impeach with Honor".

Keep the Faith, Baby!:patriot: :hippie:

51. In Nov/Dec 2000 when Chimp v. Gore was being
fought out, I watched tv in dismay and anger. Where the hell was my voice? It was apparent the election was being stolen right before America's eyes, but no one wanted to admit it. The tv talking heads were uniformly pushing for Gore to concede, and no one seemed to mind.

I wasn't on the computer much back then, but just after the inauguration when the chimp's motorcade was egged and angry protestors were there but given short shrift, I came online and googled "anti Bush." At first I found Buzzflash and Media Whores Online (for those of you that never saw it, the "Horse" was way ahead of his/her time in exposing the sham and disgrace that is today's corporate no-news machine). I also spent some time in the company of Bartcop who I'd gladly treat to a shot of chinaco anejo anytime. It was probably on Bart or Buzzflash that I first stumbled on a link to DU. At last I heard my voice - loud and clear - being eloquently expressed by many, many DUers.

I lurked for awhile, before throwing my 2 cents in, but I've been a proud DUer since mid 2001.

I've seen people come and go, experienced some nasty flame wars, laughed a lot, and cried some. DU is like any big dysfunctional family. When Khephera (Scott Lowery) died, Plaid Adder wrote a moving tribute to Scott and to DU calling it a place of comfort that should be cherished.

Now it's grown beyond a refuge to a jumping off place for activism and action. I think DU played no small part in ousting Lieberman (in the primary, anyway) and now in applying heat to ABC/Disney. Thanks in large measure to DU and DUers, Progressive voices are loud and growing louder and a force to be reckoned with.

So great post Gman. Thanks to Skinner, EarlG, and Elad for making it possible and to the DUers whose passion and commitment has turned this place from a soundingboard into a springboard.

54. Way to go, Gman!
You're an old timer like me. You piqued my interest so I checked my posts. 12,055! I haven't checked in years. I've been here quite a while as well. I was the DUer formerly known as "DumpGump" before the screen-name amnesty after the '04 election theft. I figured there was no dumping the jackass then so I switched to one of my favorite fictional characters, "ClintonTyree". Anyone who's ever read a Carl Hiaasen book knows about "the governor". ;)

Congratulations again! :yourock: DU has kept me sane all of these years as well. I'd probably be in Federal Prison by now without it. ;)

56. You echo pretty much my story, but
my battles were on the CNN boards before I found DU. They had a good mix of conservatives and liberals, then one day CNN pulled them all. It was after that I found DU.

57. Do you remember "Political Wag"?
That was my first political message board. I did battle on it regularly with repubs. That was in the spring of 1999 and on through the 2000 election. The site closed a couple of years later. My moniker was "Liberty."

58. Thank you Gman and all DUers
This seems like a good thread for my first post: a big THANK YOU to all of you.

I discovered DU after the 2002 mid-terms. I went to bed on election night pretty confident that I would be happy the next morning. When I went to work the next day and learned the results, I went home sick. I was literally crying and sick to my stomach. I found DU that day as I was perusing the internet in search of meaning, solace, something. I found what I was looking for here.

I have been a huge lurker for all these years (sorry). I read DU every day of my life. This is my biggest source of information, and sanity.

Why haven't I gotten involved? I'm super shy, even in this communication medium! But this seemed like a good thread to introduce myself and say thank you to Gman (my son's nickname, btw :)) and the rest of you for all you do to keep me informed and from loosing my mind.

Peace.

Loved your post. I'm a lurker too for the most part, but we're an important part of the audience.
Thanks for writing. It's good to know others are out there who are involved but not necessarily posting a lot.

Take care.

62. Gman, a perfect post about history that will become history. I think I
came to DU from a board on CNN that was closed down. I must have been reading on a day when someone recommended DU or perhaps I came here just before that because I felt it was worthwhile to fight lies.

I'm glad I did and am proud that I brought others here - especially on a day like today when you told us your story with accompanying history and inspired some of us to keep going. Keeping going for me means saving the country.

I'm so grateful for what I've learned. The Republicans forced us to learn about our Constitution, our laws, international law, our spirit, our tenets, and especially our history and our heroes. They showed us what we are made of. They did one thing right. We're still hanging by threads. But we'll make it.

65. Liberals predominate on the Internet, in music, in film, and on TV
Conservatives dominate radio and the hardback book market.

That's IMHO, anyway.

DU is a brilliantly designed site whose success can be measured by how shrilly and how often it's attacked by people like Brit Hume, Rush Limbaugh, and Neal Boortz.

72. I know what you mean
"it took me 5 1/2 years to get to 10,000 when some people do it in 6 months."
I found this place during the 2004 elections. I'm still working on my first thousand posts.
I don't post much, but I would be lost without DU.

73. I started in 2001 as RoscoeNobush and remember you from then
blew up that computer, then continued here as Dain in 2002. I remember how excited we all were to have a place to "meet". The freepers said we wouldn't last. we knew better. I still am excited even though there are more places than ever. I took most of the end of 2004 and early 2005 off after the fiasco, but hope we can cheer here in November.

Congrats, and thanks for staying around. A lot of us from the early days departed long ago. I hope we can last till 2009 and cheer again.
