WAPO: It's not a bipartisan scandal; it's a Republican scandal !!
Edited on Sun Jan-22-06 12:34 PM by IndyOp
If you liberal, progressive, media watchdog types would allow me to interrupt your regularly scheduled DU "debate" for just a minute - I would just like to point out that...

You just got the WaPo ombudsman to say:
"It's not a bipartisan scandal; it's a Republican scandal, and that's why the Republicans are scurrying around trying to enact lobbying reforms."

That IS real progress!!

How about taking just half-a-minute for a HAPPY DANCE!!

Okay. I now return you to your regularly scheduled DU "discussion" about how Howell is still a dishonest, blankety, blank, blank!

2. If you check the thread in the OP it has all of the details -
as "revealed" by Howell, as inferred by DU...

6. no, the Ombudsman can't be fired
or transferred. Kinda the whole point. I think she was sloppy and lazy and got spanked for it. she's remarkable defensive about it. I reccomend her column today in the Post, and Josh Marshall's comments as well. it'll be interesting to see if this makes her pay more attention to the details of her job, or she'll simply be an incompetant ombudsman.

18. Just curious...
Is "hugh" like "moran"?

And maybe we should congratulate her on her 'clarification'.

19. Yes "hugh" is like "moran" -- the ideal usage is:
"THIS IS HUGH!!11!!1!!!1" as it originally appeared in Freeperville.

"Hugh" is often followed by "SERIES" or "SERIESLY" to add extra impact! Again, with a tip of the hat to our Freeper fellow citizens.

:hi: Doc!

8. I tend to agree with you.
After everything that happened this week, there is no way that Howell or the post was going to grovel at the feet of the liberal blogosphere. The magic words are these:

My mistake set off a firestorm. I heard that I was lying, that Democrats never got a penny of Abramoff-tainted money, that I was trying to say it was a bipartisan scandal, as some Republicans claim. I didn't say that. It's not a bipartisan scandal; it's a Republican scandal, and that's why the Republicans are scurrying around trying to enact lobbying reforms.

It is obvious that the media has been trying to paint this as a bipartisan scandal. Howell's column today is actually a really huge admission. And it happend because a lot of Americans finally got tired of the faux "Fair and Balanced" game the the media has been playing, and did something about it.

10. Thanks, Skinner!
It is so, so easy to get tired and discouraged and disgusted these days.

Recognizing the victories and experiencing gratitude for *everyone* who played a role -- is what keeps us moving toward real freedom, a healthy human family, and a healthy world.

30. K&R for a Pyrrhic victory!
"It's not a bipartisan scandal; it's a Republican scandal, and that's why the Republicans are scurrying around trying to enact lobbying reforms."

On the surface, it seems like a genuine apology for a mistake but of course it is not. She is simply doing damage control, incredulously by using further RW talking points. Notice how the apparent frank acknowledgment is followed by the solution (lobbying reforms).

Now I don´t know about you but I haven´t seen any believable reports about Republicans "scurrying around trying to enact lobbying reforms".

The rest of the piece is all poor little old me and bad, bad bloggers with your rude comments. Except the one from Mr. Kelch of course:

"I wrote him back. Kelch answered: "I took some time and read an interview (online) with you, among other things. When I finished, I shuddered a little bit because it made me think I may be exhibiting an attribute that in others I despise. My e-mail to you was a cheap shot at your integrity and for that I am sorry. I sincerely hope part two of your article knocks them dead."

Great stuff! She wraps it all up with:

"Going forward, here's my plan. I'll watch every word. I'll read every e-mail and answer as many legitimate complaints as I can. The vast majority of my work takes place outside this column. But I will reject abuse and all that it stands for."

Anyone for a game of Checkers?

Mrs. Howell, you are still a gop shill.

31. No it is not a genuine apology by a long shot -
but it does change the tone of the discussion.

It is a blunt statement that this is a GOP scandal and, again, my point is that this matters...

'Tis not pyrrhic - IMHO.
