Clinton Defends Himself in Fox Interview

Sep 24, 7:26 PM (ET)

By KAREN MATTHEWS

NEW YORK (AP) - In a combative interview on "Fox News Sunday," former President Clinton defended his handling of the threat posed by Osama bin Laden, saying he tried to have bin Laden killed and was attacked for his efforts by the same people who now criticize him for not doing enough.

3. Hatred of truth, government of, by and for the people, our founding
doctrines, separation of powers, separation of church and state, checks and balances, fiscal discipline, welfare except corporate and for the wealthy, freedom of the press, the entire Bill of Rights save the 2nd Amendment, three main but equal branches of government, if fact, virtually everything good this country has ever stood for that they are systematically destroying to the applause of tens of millions of the citizenry.

6. They wouldn't have to hate the truth
if it weren't true that they are rabid racist sexist greedy unethical thieving torturers.

It's not truth itself they hate. This is a content issue.

2. 'Clinton sets the record straight' is better
'defends' sounds negative to me...it's like he did something wrong.

7. Bloomberg headline: Clinton Says Bush Ignored Bin Laden Until Sept. 11
Sept. 24 (Bloomberg) -- Former President Bill Clinton accused the Bush administration of largely ignoring the threat from al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden until the Sept. 11 attacks and defended his record on counterterrorism.

Democrat Clinton said he came ``closer to killing'' bin Laden than anybody has since in operations he approved, including a 1998 missile strike on terrorist training camps in Afghanistan.

``No, I didn't get him but at least I tried,'' Clinton said in an interview broadcast today on the ``Fox News Sunday'' program. ``That's the difference between me and some, including all the right-wingers who are attacking me now.''

Clinton said some of Republican President George W. Bush's allies, who now say Clinton didn't do enough to stop bin Laden, accused him of being ``too obsessed'' with the terrorist leader while he was in office. Bush ``downgraded'' the role of former White House adviser on counterterrorism Richard Clarke and failed to focus on bin Laden before the attacks, Clinton said.
