Impeachment hearings: The White House prepares for the worst

The Bush administration is bracing for impeachment hearings in Congress.

"A coalition in Congress is being formed to support impeachment," an administration source said.

Sources said a prelude to the impeachment process could begin with hearings by the Senate Judiciary Committee in February. They said the hearings would focus on the secret electronic surveillance program and whether Mr. Bush violated the 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.

Administration sources said the charges are expected to include false reports to Congress as well as Mr. Bush's authorization of the National Security Agency to engage in electronic surveillance inside the United States without a court warrant. This included the monitoring of overseas telephone calls and e-mail traffic to and from people living in the United States without requisite permission from a secret court.

Sources said the probe to determine whether the president violated the law will include Republicans, but that they may not be aware they could be helping to lay the groundwork for a Democratic impeachment campaign against Mr. Bush

6. I'll bet a lot of Repugs would secretly like to get rid of Bush.
He's become a liability and an embarrassment, he's responsible for their worst problem (Iraq), he's a bully and an idiot. I could see things tipping over in the direction of impeachment.

And Insight Magazine is part of the Washington Moonie Times organization, they are no lefties over there.

Iraq has pretty well been bombed back to the stone age already, Iran is the fresh meat on the horizon. Sadly, we are likely the ones who will be going into the meat grinder if we tangle with Iran.

7. Even repubs don't like being spied on
Hell, what if spying on repubs lands one in a tax audit? You know how they are with their taxes!

There will be repubs who will come out and condemn the bush admin on this, for no other reason than to further their political aspirations. They may *say* the spying was justified in interests of national security, but they know that's a lie, and what's more, a growing number of the American people, the voters, know it's a lie. If republicans don't come out against this, they are GIVING the issues of Constitutional protection, privacy, and smaller government to the Dems.

No matter how the republicans try to spin this, they have lost. They broke the rules, so basically, they're damned if they do and damned if they don't. We've got them on this.

John Kerry Prepared to Filibuster

In a letter to MoveOn.org, Senator and Presidential hopeful John Kerry says that the Supreme Court is a major reason the Democrats need to take the White House away from Bush.

I am prepared to filibuster, if necessary, any Supreme Court nominee who would turn back the clock on a woman?s right to choose, on civil rights and individual liberties, and on the laws protecting workers and the environment.>

"Our arithmetic shows that a majority of the committee could vote against the president," the source said. "If we work hard, there could be a tie."

The law limits the government surveillance to no more than 72 hours without a court warrant. The president, citing his constitutional war powers, has pledged to continue wiretaps without a warrant.

The hearings would be accompanied by several lawsuits against the administration connected to the surveillance program. At the same time, the Electronic Privacy Information Center has filed a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit that demands information about the NSA spying.

"Great, the first president to try to be impeached for not breaking the law."

That is writer33's post in its entirety (if that's an example of writer33's typical output, I wonder what writers34 on down produce).

This person's sig line is "Rush Limbaugh walks in the footsteps of giants: George Washington, Thomas Paine and Ronald Reagan." THOMAS PAINE??

Thomas Paine. Hmmmm. That would presume that Rush was literate.

Maybe the "writer" meant to say that Rush Limbaugh CREATES giant footsteps.

And wouldn't it be nice if Bush were "trying" to be impeached? Actually . . . now that I think about it, maybe he is?

all Democrats. Does anyone know if this number has grown? My Representative, Lois Capps, cosponsored a bill making recommendations for possible impeachment:

You will be pleased to know that I am an original cosponsor of H.Res. 635, which would create a select committee to investigate the Administration's intent to go to war before Congressional authorization, manipulation of pre-war intelligence and encouraging torture, retaliating against critics. Furthermore, the committee would be tasked with making recommendations regarding grounds for possible impeachment.

"Sources said the probe to determine whether the president violated the law will include Republicans, but that they may not be aware they could be helping to lay the groundwork for a Democratic impeachment campaign against Mr. Bush"

So, if republicans are included, it means they're HELPING the democrats, but of course, it can't possibly mean that those republicans actually BELIEVE HE BROKE THE LAW!

How convenient.
