"The last time I saw Mark, he was 19 years into a relationship"
"As somebody who has met Mark Foley personally and has mutual friends, I am sad for Mark and I hope he doesn't go to jail. The last time I saw Mark, he was 19 years into a relationship. That was sad that it had to be hidden. I hope the Republican Party continues to evolve so it's not so difficult to be an openly gay Republican. Will this play into the fears that all gay people are pedophiles? I hope not. There are heterosexual situations as well. Everybody decries this kind of situation. Even Mark Foley did, but he couldn't control it."

• Finance writer Andrew Tobias of Miami, treasurer of the Democratic National Committee

Seems Andrew Tobia knows a little more about Foley then most people? A 19 year relationship? Didn't Foley deny all this a couple of years ago when he wanted to run for US Senate?

1. a) No one believed him. b) He didn't get that majority leader job...
I've always wondered how it could be a result of the gay thing alone. Well.... this would explain it.

11. Foley wasn't up for a leadership position
that I know of. I think you are referring to Drier maybe? He didn't get the nod because of his "suspected gay lifestyle", although it was never spoken out loud.

12. Oh? I came to think that must've been Foley. Hmm, my mistake perhaps
Well, I guess my point is, having someone you know you have dirt on, continuing to serve in office, can be a very useful thing to the ruthless, yes?

14. He's probably low-tech. Higher security that way.
But that's just me mouthing off with total guesswork. I don't really want to know. Obsessive guys like that scare me. I'm driven, not obsessive. :)

2. the Bush family has obviously problems with speech and grammar
``My heart goes out to his family but more importantly I'm really disappointed if these allegations are true and if he's resigned, it appears they may be true. If Mark has resigned because of inappropriate behavior than it's not a loss at all, it's the right thing to do, people should expect that and I don't know why else you would resign.''

3. Jeb does seems to be tripping over his own tongue
trying to get this statement out of his mouth. Maybe he had a sudden onset of the stutters?

4. I have been thinking along the same lines
"Will this play into the fears that all gay people are pedophiles? I hope not. There are heterosexual situations as well. Everybody decries this kind of situation."

I think the possibility that a consensual element to this situation should be explored further.

Most people would quickly recognize the possibility that a young woman would hold a level of sophistication that could reasonably create a mutual relationship.

I am questioning the wisdom and fairness of turning this into a partisan opportunity.

I would hate for such a strategy to perpetuate stigma and stereotypes.
IMO we should rise above that and allow due process to prevail without further contributing to the public scrituny he will inevitibly encounter.

5. It wouldn't be an issue
if Foley hadn't repeatedly lied about his relationships and sexual orientation.

It's the hypocrisy that's the problem here.

6. That was Bay Buchanan's line on CNN late
last night. She said everyone knew he was gay and since she was a parent, she wanted to know who in the leadership covered this up. Bay jumped ship faster than Foley could send an IM.

8. Everything is a partisan opportunity!
There is no value that cannot be sold out, no principle that is not to be compromised in pursuit of partisan advantage. Why we are constantly told right here, no matter how detestable an individual may be, vote for them anyway, just as long as they claim to be a Democrat-no matter if they have worn the appellation for a week or less, all we want is that seat!
