GOPers Join Dems to Call for Leadership's Ouster

"Members from both parties are suggesting Hastert and House Majority Leader John Boehner quit. . . .
Rep. Christopher Shays (R., Conn.) said any leader who had been aware of Mr. Foley’s behavior and failed to take action should step down. 'If they knew or should have known the extent of this problem, they should not serve in leadership,' he said over the weekend.

"In the talk shows today others chimed in on this theme too. Sen. Mike DeWine and Rep. Sherrod Brown, in a Meet the Press interview on their Ohio Senate race, couched their language carefully, but they said if anyone in the House leadership knew of the emails and failed to act they should resign. Seeming to refer to Mr. Hastert, Mr. Brown said anyone who knew about the emails but failed to act jeopardized the safety of House pages and forfeited the public trust." (WSJ's Washington Wire)

1. What would their resignation do to the elections?
Would there be a special vote or what?

3. They have to be re-elected by the caucus anyway during the next term
Should they have a majority.

6. Seems all they are asking is for them to resign their leadership positions
If they had an ounce of decency they would demand they be expelled from Congress and never allowed to run for any office where they could hold power over people ever again..This is more than just a child predator incident, it is an abuse of power. How do you think these young pages felt when a person of enormous influence over their lives makes suggestive and illegal comments to them?

2. Why is it that it seems only a sex scandal can do in a politician...
...sure, they should go over this--but they and others like them should have gone long ago over so many other things. I guess the average American mind can only fully understand wrongdoing of a sexual nature and anything else is too abstract???

4. Shays is trying hard to distance himself
from the rest of the repukes, he's facing a stiffer challenge in CT than he's had in a long time. Although he seems like a nice enough guy in person (I sat next to him on a flight to DC once) I really hope he can be tossed. He may be one of the more "moderate" of the nutjobs but just sitting on that side makes him a supporter of bush and that should be good enough to lose the job.

5. Well translating the Republicans is easy enough
"Get those bums out and put me in power, please."

7. Shay and Dewine are both in very tight races
It is the only position they can take. Being outraged plays better than being an apologist.

8. And even a republican will have a hard time being an apologist
for a child predator. This is what Foley is, a child predator. Just like "torture is torture", we need to keep it clear what Foley was doing and what the Republican leadership was condoning and facilitating - child predation...
