Cover-Up Over Rep. Mark Foley Growing

Florida GOP leaders are scrambling to name a replacement candidate to replace disgraced former House Representative Mark Foley.

Foley resigned Friday under a building amount of damaging evidence against him.

The FBI says it's looking into former Congressman Mark Foley's online exhanges with teenagers to see if he violated federal law. The exchanges have proven to be too graphic for broadcast networks to mention or even quote.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert asked the Justice Department to look into Foley's sexually suggestive messages and also asked Governor Bush to have the state Department of Law Enforcement look into the former congressman's conduct.

The White House and Democratic leaders in Congress also called today for a criminal probe. White House counselor Dan Bartlett calls the allegations against Foley shocking. But he says President Bush didn't learn of Foley's inappropriate e-mails to a 16-year-old boy and instant messages to other boys before the news broke last week.

Despite the rhetoric, it looks as though some in the House leadership may have covered up some information, bringing up the age old question: what did they know? and when did they know it?

1. Wow.
A scandal that the press won't bury in a day or two, like they've done with everything else.

7. I recall many a DUer saying that a sex scandal would be the thing
to finally break through in the media.

And I guess we were correct. Also, I think we have a case where it's "time" for the media to reel in the administration. The media's "masters" have benefited enough from the insane Bush administration.

I've heard that said many times here on DU. It really pisses me off, but that doesn't make it less true.

25. Not in this day and age it appears.
Don't take this to mean that I am disagreeing with you, I'm not. It's sad, freakish times we're living in, indeed.

Americans thrive on the airing of nasty dirty laundry, and could care less about truth or justice the American way anymore.

It's as if the nation is filled with spoiled ADD children.

19. I even predicted...
that it would involve men, not women. You could sense this thing was coming a while ago, I'm just amazed that it broke right before an election... very interesting to say the least.

9. Too late
The levies on this one are broken. They are drowing in their own fetid water. They were so fugging scared Friday that they lied and they're using more lies to cover those lies. ABC is releasing more IMs and this is going nowhere from now until election day. More heads will be chopped - expect a suicide or a 'suicided' before this is over.

10. Too graphic for broadcast networks?
Well then just post them on the Internet. Nothing is too graphic for us. Especially after Abu Ghraib. If we could look at those horrible pictures, we can probably look at anything at this point.

12. "too graphic for broadcast networks"
If I may play devil's advocate, I agree that it is.

The broadcast media could say that much, or characterize the messages as "salacious" or "solicitous" and still get the point across.

Dan Bartlett calls the allegations against Foley shocking. But he says President Bush didn't learn of Foley's inappropriate e-mails to a 16-year-old boy and instant messages to other boys before the news broke last week.

Silly Mr. Bartlett. Right now there is no reason to think Bush knew anything. In fact, there no reason to think Bush knows anything at all.

However, Speaker Hastert's denials are absurd.

15. I called Boehner's office this afternoon.
and the apologizer at the other end of the phone said oh well they knew about the non sexual emails but not the sexual IMs and emails. Boy do they want to split hairs to cover themselves from shame, criminal prosecution and losing votes.

He also denided that Boehner knew anythign about this. Oh sure right.

I suggest everyone call Hastert's office in DC today and ask him to resign. Hastert has returned to the capital today.

Call Boehner's office in Ohio.

good enough.
i told them as a supervisor he'd had an obligation to do a lot more than that. that it was imm0oral that they looked the other way while this guy was trying to seduce more boys. i asked them if he was planning to resign.

24. Hastert wants the Whistle Blowers Investigated...
From his letter:

“Therefore, I also request that the Department undertake an investigation into who had specific knowledge of the content of any sexually explicit communications between Mr. Foley and any former or current House pages and what actions such individuals took, if any, to provide them to law enforcement. I request that the scope of your investigation include any and all individuals who may have been aware of this matter-be they Members of Congress, employees of the House of Representatives, or anyone outside the Congress.

Since they already knew about this and now with its exposure and by exposing that they knew they are out for blood.
The White House has stated they don't think there should be an independent investigation. We all know what that means, that they have no intention of investigating their own short cumings....
