1. Sectarian violence: violence between religious sects...
civil war: A war between factions of the same country; there are five criteria for international recognition of this status: the contestants must control territory, have a functioning government, enjoy some foreign recognition, have identifiable regular armed forces, and engage in major military operations.

But one the other hand, the administration uses the word "war" so liberally that we should take a hint and call it a civil war in Iraq.

2. The Shi'a militias control Sadr city in Baghdad, and soon the Sunni...
will control the Anbar provence, in other words when that happens there will be a civil war (by the textbook definition.)

6. But the facts on the ground are the same
killing and wounding and torturing and kidnapping and no chance for anyone to try to lead a normal life.

I wonder whether one of the definition precludes intervention by outside forces.

3. LOL, nothing, in reality, but semantically, word-game wise, everything
It is merely playing semantic games, imo, to avoid using the words "civil war" by the bush cabal and it's supporters.
