I don't want to take Bubba's hunting gun away, that toothpaste is out of the tube. But why do Heston and company fight ANY restrictions, especially assault rifles that have no use except to kill people? Why can other countries have guns and not manage to repeat this carnage again and again?

Gun Worshippers.

And remember, the NRA are those nice folks who fought to make vest-piercing ammunition legal. As in ammunition that kills cops.

57. Yes.
From bulletproofme.com/quick_answers.shtml

"2. What about protection from RIFLES ?

The much higher velocity of rifle rounds requires HARD Body Armor Rifle Plates – Level III or Level IV Ballistic Steel, Ceramic or Polyethylene - usually ~10" by 12" (~25 by 30 cm.) and generally from 3 to 8 lbs (1.6 - 3.6 kg.) per plate to cover the Chest and / or Back (that's 6 to 16 lbs. Front & Back)

SOFT Body Armor vests only offer pistol, Fragmentation, and shotgun protection (birdshot and buckshot, but NOT shotgun slugs). Even doubling up TWO Level III-A soft vests would NOT stop a rifle bullet!"

All patrol officers that I'm aware of wear soft body armor because of the need for flexibility versus the risks they usually face. I've never known a non-SWAT type to wear the heavy rifle plates, especially not in front and back. And those only cover a small area over the heart.

62. Actually, hunting rounds are MORE powerful generally.
The most popular round for hunting deer is still the 30-06 (7.62mm), because it has good range and enough weight to bring a deer down all at once. Smaller rounds generally just wound the deer, requiring the hunter to chase it through the forest until it bleeds to death...the larger 30-06 is an instant kill bullet and has been a standard in hunting for hore than a half century. The .30-06 is actually about 20% more powerful than the 223 (5.56mm) round used by the M-16 assault rifle, and is essentially the same round used in the AK-47. Both the AK-47 and M-16 are considered to be high velocity weapons and will pierce body armor with little difficulty.

33. Bradyesque misinformation.
Actually, the NRA helped draft the current legislation that bans "cop killer" bullets.

The good folks at Brady/Handgun Control Inc/anti-gun zealots/etc, had originally proposed a bill that would have been a de facto ban on just about any type ammo available (including hunting and sporting ammunition). Their model would have used a performance based standard (any ammo capable of penetrating a bullet resistant vest), whereas the NRAs version (with assistance from the Justice Department and Treasury Department),defined armor piercing ammo based on materials and composition (steel core, beryllium, etc).

Furthermore, the AP ban only applies to ammunition for which can be used in any handgun.

For that reason, there are AP rifle calibers that are prohibited for possession by civilians (even though their FMJ counterparts can penetrate bullet resistant vests as well).

Would you rather I go away and start my own thread praising the glory of guns?

I realize we disagree on this issue, and that this is the "Internets" where differing opinions can be expressed, and that when there's at least a half-dozen threads on the same subject material, paths are bound to cross...

But, stalking?

 :silly:

Man, and some people have to nerve to accuse gun owners of being paranoid.

I suppose you'll be checking under the bed and inside the closet before you go to sleep tonight?

35. Hestons out of the picture.
But, FWIW, they don't fight "ANY" restriction. One of the most recent examples was their support of legislation that banned firearms that would not be detected by metal detecting security measures.

Quite frankly, why should they compromise when they have no reason to?

Why don't the anti-gun organizations and legislators make their own compromise?

Instead they introduce useless/feel good legislation both at the federal and state level...

Ballistic databases...

Micro stamping of ammunition and handguns...

50 BMG bans...

Gun show "loophole" legislation...

And yes, we must do something about all those evil "assault rifles" flooding the streets... the choice of criminals and terrorists.

Assault rifles, like all automatic weapons, have been restricted for 72 years now...by the Title 2/Class III provisions of the National Firearms Act.

The gun issue isn't about hunting guns, FWIW. Only 1 in 5 gun owners is a hunter.

Sometimes it is difficult to understand why people -- even progressives -- are so attached to their guns. My :loveya: and I agree to disagree on that one. But he grew up in a ranching environment, where rifles and shotguns were a fact of life. It's a world that is alien to the northern big-city me. Happily, he loves kids way too much to ever go in and shoot up a school. Or anyone, for that matter.

I think the map is fairly representative of population distribution, (more east of the Mississippi than west, although I had not considered that before). Plus the fact that I just got back from a week in Auburn, Alabama (for a short class), which has become much, much more JeebusLand than up here in Greenville, SC (home of Bob Jones U.).

We can also likely agree that the NRA is a republican organization. Can't we?

And in many ways, it is a conservative/liberal debate. One that we would be best off not having, because we've all read it before anyway. It doesn't need to be, i think if the argument were framed like what is good for NY'ers is not always good for Tennesseeans, and vice-versa - perhaps the argument could be bridged. But I've talked to idiots in Florida who vote Republican strictly because the libruls are coming for their guuuuuns. I swear I thought it was fiction, but its not.

It's only a matter of time before we get these things off the streets. They serve no purpose other than to kill.

What things? Guns?

Considering that between a quarter and a third of Dems and indies choose to own guns, as do roughly 40% of households nationwide, that's not going to happen.

Merely raising the price on over-10-round handgun magazines, and requiring that civilian target rifles with protruding handgrips be sold with fake adjustable-length stocks instead of real ones, and pin-on brakes instead of screw-on brakes, cost Dems the House, the Senate, and two presidencies. Care to speculate on the political cost of an outright gun ban?

It's crap like that that helps perpetuate the "Dems'll take yer guns" meme...
