There have been many ominous signs popping up lately. Not long ago, there was the outrage of the right that the funeral of Coretta Scott King was not used by the African American Community to heap praise and glory on george w bush. There has also been an upswing of self-righteous right wing white people who feel entitled to lecture ethnic people on what should not "upset" them, most offensively the notion that it's not racist to say the "N" word, since many blacks use that word to each other.
Recently, CNN has been not-so-subtly getting into the act.
Within the last couple of weeks, I've seen a story of a right wing radio host in Houston (who also happens to be a gun shop owner. GASP!) advocating people to arm themselves against Katrina victims because one of them said on the radio that if he stopped getting government checks he was "gonna go out and get some money". The story ended with the inspirational view of this nut warning those whom barbara bush said that things were working out "very well" for, that Texans don't carry guns because they're allowed to, but "cuz we wanna"!
Recently Nancy Grace may well have badgered an Asian Woman who was a suspect in the disappearance of her child into suicide. Now I haven't been among the Nancy Grace bashers on this board, but I have a few questions for her. Would she have decried this behavior when she was a prosecutor? Would she have considered it to be a form of vigilantism if she lost a defendant she was prosecuting in this manner? Would she have considered it justice denied? How about if this child was alive somewhere and her mother were the only one who knew where?
As a parent, if this woman has done harm to or killed her child, I hope that there is a special place in hell for her. BUT... it was not Nancy Grace's place to appoint herself judge, jury and executioner for the sake of her ratings.
The last and most disgraceful example is (SURPRISE!) glenn beck.
In a commercial that has been running for the last few weeks on headline news, we've seen beck pontificating that we won't be safe until we "stop bein' so frickin' PC". He then goes on to say that the Israelis profile, why don't we?
The biggest shame is not that beck is such an idiot. This is the man who has had on the air ravings about killing Michael Moore, hating 9/11 families and putting braille saying "hot" on coffee makers just to piss off the blind. We know that glenn beck is a racist loon. The travesty is that cnn uses this line to get viewers. Detestable.
I know that I'm preaching to the choir here, but once again cnn is showing that it is only interested in competing with fox "news" for the far right audience.
Unfortunately, we in the Center and Left are left with Keith Olberman and 2 comedians for competent news coverage. As it continues to be more and more obvious, WE have to be the media.
PEACE!
