Sen. Trent Lott: ‘Iraqis Look Like Iraqis And Americans Look Like Americans’

Appearing on the Daily Show last night, Sen. Trent Lott (R-MS) was asked about his recent comments expressing confusion over the ongoing sectarian violence in Iraq. “Why do Sunnis kill Shiites? How do they tell the difference? They all look the same to me,” he said previously.

Last night, Lott explained, “Iraqis look like Iraqis and Americans look like Americans.” In Sen. Lott’s view, all Americans apparently look like him. Lott added, “Methodist, Baptists, and Catholics live in my hometown. They all look the same to me, they all look like Americans.” Watch it:

LOTT: Methodist, Baptists, and Catholics live in my hometown. They all look the same to me, they all look like Americans.

if Trent Lott had a brain he'd be dangerous

somebody tie him to his kitchen chair and keep him there.

1. Translation...
White people look like white people. Brown people don't look like white people.

2. I saw this..

...his point was (though awkwardly stated) that he didn't understand why people kill because of religion. I don't like Lott, but I don't think he meant anything sinister. He was saying we should all look at each other as countrymen, rather than members of a faith.

3. He claims that he doesn't understand why people kill over religion.
I suspect that the reality is that he doesn't understand why people kill over what he sees as a "false" religion.

4. Of course that's true, it's a truism!
Not to imply that those looks are distinguishable.

5. Yes, you moron, they may look alike, but they do not think alike.
The militias don't sort them by their looks, but by their family names (is it a Shi'a or Sunni or Kurdish name) their addresses (also, is it a Shi'a or Sunni or Kurdish neighborhood). Just because most divisions in THIS country are based on the myth of race, doesn't mean it has always been so, or will continue to be so -- consider the anti-Catholic riots of the 1830s & 40s. The civil war was fought, primarily, by white northerners against white southerners, and looking at them you can't tell the difference - in fact, there were Union units with grey uniforms and Confederate units with blue uniforms and ther were Zouaves units on both sides - there were a lot of people shooting their own people because they looked alike. And they all looked like Americans.
