Are we about to attack Iran and Syria? God, (whoever and wherever you are), help us.

1. And for his next trick Rove will turn water into wine.
This is a total disaster for the Republican party. Period. And Rove is not omnipotent.

3. but attacking Iran might still be in the works too
This is not a Rove trick, it is just something that happened. oops. However, doesn't mean Iran is safe though. Or any of us are.

7. It diverted attention away from Rice's lies about pre-9/11 knowledge
AND from the whole torture bill mess AND its plenty of ammunition for the gay bashers to spin to their hearts content.

This story will be in the headlines until the election. Several "big" names will fall. And it'll continually distract from the real issues.

IMO, Foley *is* the October Suprise.

14. Do you honestly think that surrendering both houses of congress
will help Bush push his agenda through? Just because it had the effect of distracting from the 9/11 Rice stuff doesn't mean it was some <cue scary music> plot.

18. Clearly not...
I just don't buy that this scandal is going to hand the Dems both houses on a platter.

19. Average folks who pay no attention to politics/policy in DC and neither
know nor care about pre 9/11 briefings or habeas corpus for detainees WILL pay attention to GOP covering for one of their own in a sex scandal involving underage boys.

It's not good news for the GOP. They'd rather be arguing about the law re: detainees or Iraq since they claim they're so good on national security. For example, Hastert attempted to divert from the Foley mess to national security, saying it would be devastating for the nation for him to leave the speakership since he (and the GOP) are protecting the nation. But it didn't work while the headlines are making it even more evident that that they can't even protect teenage male congressional pages from one of their own. Now "Human Events" the RW Moonie owned mag is added to the RW pubs, organizations, individuals saying Hastert should resign. Hastert was supposed to make an appearance in a district to campaign for a fellow Congresscritter and today the local guy cancelled Hastert's appearance. He may just be the first of several

Foley's seat was considered safe and now Majority Leader Boehner's publicly said it's as good as lost to the Dems. A few others involved in this mess, Shimkus, Reynolds, are running for re-election and they're now appearing shakier than previously in their districts.

You think this is a diversion? Right now the GOP would welcome the public/media spotlight returning to Iraq, detainees, wiretaps, 9-11. etc. where they have their talking points down and they can appeal to their "base." But instead they're dealing with trying to explain how they had no idea that for a decade one of their own was chasing after underage Congressional pages as more and more info comes out that they had reason to know and/or find out just what was going on. This is a nightmare for the GOP.

9. The neocon agenda and the conservatives...
...are crumbling into mayhem.

Karl Rove isn't looking as clever now, is he?

Look at all of the scandals and disasters to befall this pResident and the Rep-controlled
Congress. DeLay...Plame...Iraq...Katrina...Foley...Scooter...Abramoff...Illegal wiretapping. I'd say whoever running the show is completely incompetent and corrupt---not all powerful and wise.

America hates this Republican-majority Congress by 70 percent. The Reps are losing their Fundie base and many true Conservatives are abandoning ship. Most reps up for re-election won't be seen with the pResident. Junior and Cheney are forced to limit their campaigning to secret fundraising meetings in the basements of suburban homes.

I wouldn't call this swamp of thuggery the result of brilliance.

...but that's just me.

As desperate as they are to hold onto control of the Congress? Yeah, they WANT to attack Iran. No support = no government = no military = no attack.

surrender right now.

Good thing is: he doesn't.

13. No, the only thing that can save BushCo is now quickly sinking
BuschCo has to keep the House in order to stop the investigations that will lead to Impeachment and/or War Crimes. I can't see Rove sinking his lifeboat in order to go for broke on a new and shiny war.

15. I doubt it.
It's too big and too ugly to be a diversion. If it was a diversion Rove was looking for, I doubt it would be something like this that hits people on such a gut level - sex, youths, predatory behavior - that just resonates too loudly and too easily with people. I think that a Rove distraction would be more along the lines of financial wranglings, something more esoteric than a scandal with sexual overtones such as this.

Edited on Wed Oct-04-06 11:56 PM by GreenTea
nowhere to be found on the media. And what else will this story overshadow...only Rove knows, he knows what coming and what needs to be diverted in the coming weeks on TV...What's the worst that can happen to the republicans, Hastert steps down and Foley goes to jail...not bad considering what's NOT being talked about...Sex will always gets peoples attention...Rove knows this and wants this to ride until he needs to throw something else out and we will all eat that up, every time. We think this is really it, the republicans have fucked up big time...Rove gets stories killed and keeps the stories alive he wants on the MSM...

13 more soldiers have died in Iraq the past couple of days, Iraq is in turmoil in civil war, Afghanistan is lost Frist want to turn it over to the Taliban, Rice ignored reports & lied, N Korea wants to test another Nuclear weapon, Bush's torture bill is not being discussed, real issues social issues are being ignored, billions more being appropriated for the occupations for corporate profit as we go further in debt, and if Bush blows up half the world, people will only want to talk about sex and Foley...what is coming next...this story will overshadow it...look at everyone here its all they want to talk about...like always they believe Bush is going down with this one. They get played over & over and they still believe this just accidentally happened, even though it's benefiting BushCo again...Shit in four or five weeks from now even Foley's seat will be in republicans hands a 78% republican district...What will they lose as we are so focused on a sex story...Hastert stepping down...He was probably ready for some big exposure anyway, a few things pretend to be cleaned up the repugs look good and everything else has and will be ignored, all with a simple leak & smokescreen, it had to be a big sex story to keep our attention, Rove knew that. And the sex story keeps everyone amused, entertained and believing it's real...not unlike 9-11. (Without the sex, it obviously wasn't needed).

20. No, this is not a Rove diversion.
Of course there are much more dire issues.

But, I think this 'sex scandal' is providing a clearing house for all the various dislikes people have about George Bush. I'm also sure that there is much going on in Washington that I have no idea about. But, this scandal is providing the gathering place for all and every complaint against Bush.

The GOP is imploding. KKKarl can't be too happy about that!!

23. Quoting Rummy, "Who knows?"
Edited on Thu Oct-05-06 01:08 AM by gumby
Personally, I think there is a power struggle going on within the Ruling Elite. Jr. overstepped his playpen.

Woodward was brought out, just like with Nixon to signal that the game is on. However, it's going to be a struggle considering the gerrymandering and the voting machines.

The fact that (what's left of) the Military is speaking out is also very important in the equation.

Just like the Right-Wing sez: Gays, Guns and God. There ya go!!

edit: more about the military http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/10/04/AR2006100401741.html

22. Nope, I don't think that this is one of his messes
If it were one, I would think that it would have been much better managed than this has. it continues to grow out of control and spin in ever-growing and wilder circles. If the moron cam up with this as a diversion, it has then become VERY clear that he has the IQ of rotting oranges. Either way, it works for us. I would, however, not put it past him and his ilk to set off a "terror attack" to try to refocus the conversation and push their agenda forward. I wouldn't put ANYTHING past them at all. They are analogous to a cornered rabid rat. Nothing is too much to keep power, however incompetent they may be.
