Excuses to date - re: Foley's Folly
Excuses to date:
-- GOP Leadership didn't know
-- It's the Democrats Fault
-- Democrats did it too (i.e. had sex scandals)
-- E-mail and Instant Messages were just "naughty"
-- Foley had a drinking problem
-- Foley was abused

Did I miss any?

Meanwhile....I'm waiting for the spin that revealing Foley's activities has emboldened the enemy

6. Let's see...
--The boys were beasts. (Drudge)

--The age of consent is 16 in Washington.

--Bill Clinton, Bill Clinton, Bill Clinton

The Republicans are circling the wagons and starting to parrot each other now, while at the same time looking for people the party is willing to sacrifice to get this mess to go away.

13. He's gay
That's been the big one lately and appears to be the one they're going to run with because not only is it a nice distraction but it fits in perfectly with their anti-gay agenda.

Of course, it also ignores the BLATANT fact that this excuse doesn't explain why far more straight men sexually harass teenaged girls.

And unfortunately, the response to it from a lot of people right here at DU is the Reverse Anti-Gay Excuse (he did it because society made him suppress his gayness, so the only sex outlet he had was minors he had power over).

And of course, just like the Anti-Gay Excuse, this is just as untrue and also ignores the BLATANT fact that this excuse doesn't explain why far more straight men sexually harass teenaged girls... we know it's not all those closeted straight men acting out on minors because society makes them supress they're straightness.

And what is more unfortunate about the Reverse Anti-Gay Excuse is that it feeds right into the GOP's hands by making the argument about the fact that he's gay (which has nothing to do with it) thereby taking the REAL argument off the table... just what Rove was hoping for.

18. JC Watts blames it on culture of washington/congress
http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0610/05/sitroom.01.html

WATTS: You know, Wolf, I think there's a deeper question here, Wolf. What is it about the culture of Congress that we would have about five or six members over the last year, Republican and Democrat, member on Appropriations sending money back home to, you know -- for self-interest, a leader in the Republican leadership having to resign because of this network of deceit -- deceit -- and trying to gain power, and, you know, two members just in the last three weeks resign. They're checking into alcoholics -- a rehabilitation facility.

What is in the culture of Washington that would -- that we would find these kind of things? And I think there's a much deeper question here than this Mark Foley thing, as bad as it is.
