Hastert in Lockdown
The local NBC affiliate reports this morning, "As far as we know, Dennis Hastert has not emerged from his home here in at least the last 24 hours. And when he does, then he's gonna have a throng of media waiting for him.... there is so much media here that there's a Hastert security detail assigned to make sure we stay in line."

19. Now, now--Hastert's weight isn't any more relevant to this scandal
than Foley's sexual orientation is.

What's relevant is that Foley knew the pages were underage, and that when Hastert found out about Foley, the very least he should have done was taken Foley off the anti-pedophile congressional commitee. For displaying such negilience and incompetence, Hastert must also be thrown under the bus--though it would probably be a lot easier to throw the bus.

11. One thing I noticed
His "consituents" that they interviewed were all in downtown Chicago, which is not part of Hastert's district. I have to wonder if they first made sure they were from his district (which would require talking to a ton of people, given how large the Chicago area is, and how far from downtown Chicago his district is), or if they just asked anyone who came by.

I live in Hastert's district, and it's difficult to say at this point how much his support is dropping. Certainly his Democratic opponent, John Laesch, is doing a lot better lately. I would LOVE to see Hastert booted so it's been really interesting watching this whole thing pan out.

25. BEZ had a reporter out in Batavia this am
And their reporter got nothing but universal praise from the diners and pedestrians and shop owners he talked to.

Denny has stoked his image as the lovable old gym coach gone to Washington, just like Mr. Smith. He is now surrounded by his adoring homies who are going to feed his gigantic ego every time he (sooner or later) goes out in this area.

Laesch finally has a chance to at least get himself noticed with all the brouhaha in the area. While the media sit waiting for Denny to emerge, the reporters gotta talk to SOMEONE - it may as well be John Laesch. I think Laesch has been handling things really well lately - I hope people can get a chance to really see what a decent candidate he is now (AND DONATE SOME REALLY NEEDED $$$).

I've got a farm in Batavia and boy did I make sure I called Hastert's office first thing this week to demand he resign. My husband sent an email with the same message. The reporter from BEZ said that phone calls have been running 3-1 in favor of Denny riding this out and not resigning.

So if you know of anyone who can call the office, please do so! He needs to hear from more of his constituents that we want him out.

18. OMG!
Lord & Taylor is closing its Water Tower store! Oh well I never liked it anyway.

Seriously, it's hilarious that the reporter says Hastert "continues to enjoy a lot of local support, though some constituents we talked to are starting to waver a bit," and then she interviews people in downtown Chicago. Unless she asked them where they live, they ain't constituents. Especially the African-American ones. Yorkville used to be a little hayseed town, a crazy-quilt burg spread out among the farmlands along the Fox River. Now it's a wealthy white-flight enclave. Ain't no African-Americans there.
