I'm sure it wasn't easy (the decision or the surgery). I have a close friend (male) who had the surgery and had to go back in for 4 surgeries for complications. Giving up sugar and sugary sauces for life is a total lifestyle decision and took him a year to get over the "loss" and stop grieving for it. Anyway, he's lost 265 pounds and is in a normal man's "large" now (he's tall).

Myself, I went back to the gym to start lifting with a trainers in May, and I have seen a lot of changes in my body, but *sigh* I am still about 50-60 pounds overweight (that would be "FAT" to the incredibly "sensitive" people in this thread). I guess some people would call me chunky or chubby or even fat (I'm only 5'1" and a size 14 now down from an 18), but I am pretty darned fit and REALLY STRONG (I can leg press 600 pounds - no exaggeration) and can squat 350.

Anyway, like you, it irritates me when posters focus on physical attributes (like for Ann Coulter's underweight or Denny Hastert's overweight). These people are heinous and immoral - isn't that enough ammunition without having to focus on juvenile name-calling?

There's a woman further up this thread who is a bodybuilder and just had gastric bypass surgery. I have a physical condition which causes unexplained weight gain. I can lose weight, but I'm never going to be thin. Of course, this has nothing to do with genetics, either.

Those genetic cases are few and far between (just an uneducated guess on my part). Personally, I had to have my thyroid nuked some years ago as a result of Graves' Disease, so I have to fight the fat battle too. I do it by watching what I eat, taking a thyroid supplement, and getting exercise. I've lost 45 pounds in the past year and a half, and at 51 years of age and 6'1", I'm happy if I can keep my weight under the Deuce.

Not every overweight person has a medical reason for it. There's an epidemic of overweight people in this country.
