http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=aZq16fdqq4RU&refer=homeOct. 5 (Bloomberg) -- House Speaker Dennis Hastert, saying ``the buck stops here,'' accepted personal responsibility for the safety of congressional pages while lashing out at Democrats and the news media for fueling the Mark Foley sex scandal.
The Illinois Republican, battling to hold his post amid controversy over his handling of the Foley matter, dismissed calls for his resignation and said core Republican supporters shouldn't desert the party over the issue. ``When the base finds out who's feeding this monster, they're not going to be happy,'' he told the Chicago Tribune. ``The people who want to see this thing blow up are ABC News and a lot of Democratic operatives.''
The scandal is dominating news coverage and fracturing the House Republican leadership before the midterm elections in which they are struggling to maintain their control of both houses of Congress.
An Associated Press-Ipsos poll released today found that about half of likely voters say recent congressional scandals will be very or extremely important when they vote Nov. 7. Makes a lot of sense to take responsibility and blame someone else at the same time. :banghead:
