27. A rumor spurred by facetious pronunciation
Tar-jey instead of Target. A relative of mine used to jokingly call it an Irish store, the O' Target (because of the logo in front of the name).

A bad joke became an even worse Conservative smear and conventional wisdom on behalf of a rival company. Much like American politics in the same period of time.

And it could have, Target is owned by Dayton-Hudson of Dayton's department store fame--I believe out of Minneapolis.

9. Target Corp. owns Target
Edited on Thu Oct-05-06 06:18 PM by Fighting Irish
Formerly Daytons, then Dayton-Hudson, then they changed to Target Corp. and spun off Daytons, Hudsons and Marshall Field.

Always based in Minneapolis.

Minnesota Senator Mark Dayton is a member of the Dayton clan.

15. I don't shop there

A pharmacist refused to fill a script for emergency contraceptives and Target stood behind the decision.

I will not shop there until they change their policy.

Cheers

18. I can understand that..
I don't know anything about Lowe's policy's, but I do know that at about 6 out of 10 Wal-Marts I know of, there's a Lowe's right next door that looks nearly identical to the Wal-Mart. I don't know if it's just their business practice to build stores next to where a Wal-Mart pops up, but it definitely makes sense to me that people would think they're connected.

17. Obviously...
it means Wal-Mart "owns" them. As in...they are by far more efficient.

By the way, the retail market shares the problems of Wal-Mart. It's not like Wal-Mart is unique. It's just the biggest. If you're going to be reasonable, boycott all retailers.

25. No I prefer to boycott the ones who
treat their employees like shit. WalMart fits that bill quite well.

And if you want to know how employees are treated, ask them. I do. The folks at Target love working there and say the company is good to its employees.

I stopped going to my local KMart when it became a Sears because the employees claimed that Sears cut their pay and benefits.

There is also a locally owned store I no longer patronize because the owner made the mistake of yelling at an employee when I was in there.

26. They're all doing things wrong.
They share the same practices. They treat their employees just like the other large retailers do. Wal-Mart does many things wrong, but look at the bigger picture. It's an industry issue. It's Target and others as well. They're all doing things wrong.

Next time you go to WalMart, ask the employees how they are treated. You might be shocked by what you hear.

21. No, but......I won't shop at either store and here's why
Edited on Thu Oct-05-06 07:48 PM by tpsbmam
Target gives 83% of their political donations to Republicans, they've given their pharmacists the right to refuse to fill emergency contraceptives on religious ground, they treat their employees as badly as Walmart does (oppose unions, mostly part-time work, must work months on end before getting benefits and even then it's hard to get enough hours to qualify for benefits), they've been caught using sweatshops, etc etc etc etc.

22. Prior to the emergency contraceptive refusals, I spent at least $100...
a week at Target because I refused to go to Walmart. I probably spend less than $20 there every three months now. K-Mart's not perfect either, but this is where I end up going since there's not much else left where I live.

23. We have the same issue here.....
I'd love to shop 100% at local merchants and I try to do as much of that as I can, but money is an issue as is the availability of some stuff. Sorry, but I can't afford to pay $20 for a t-shirt! Sadly, we don't have COSTCO in our area, which is where I used to do all of that kind of shopping -- they give blue, treat their employees well, etc etc.

31. Wal Mart Doesn't Buy Up Businessesses, They Drive They Out
Wal Mart, to the best of my knowledge, does not buy up competitors for greater market share. They simply out price everyone else, stay open more hours, offer better parking, make it super easy to find stuff, and staff the cash registers better than most grocery stores. Hate them or love them, one thing is for sure - they do what they say they do, conviently and inexpensively provide cheap stuff that people buy lots of and clearly want.

This is how walmart does it folks.. That 3 cents you save on green beans means a single mother has to use public aid for her kid's health care and you pay for it through your taxes..

37. They're both publicly traded.
Go read their SEC filings.

I'm sure the FTC and DOJ would be interested in whether WMT is an owner of TGT. Believe me, this would not exist in the "rumor" bin.
