I don't know anything about Lowe's policy's, but I do know that at about 6 out of 10 Wal-Marts I know of, there's a Lowe's right next door that looks nearly identical to the Wal-Mart. I don't know if it's just their business practice to build stores next to where a Wal-Mart pops up, but it definitely makes sense to me that people would think they're connected.

treat their employees like shit. WalMart fits that bill quite well.

And if you want to know how employees are treated, ask them. I do. The folks at Target love working there and say the company is good to its employees.

I stopped going to my local KMart when it became a Sears because the employees claimed that Sears cut their pay and benefits.

There is also a locally owned store I no longer patronize because the owner made the mistake of yelling at an employee when I was in there.

They share the same practices. They treat their employees just like the other large retailers do. Wal-Mart does many things wrong, but look at the bigger picture. It's an industry issue. It's Target and others as well. They're all doing things wrong.

Target gives 83% of their political donations to Republicans, they've given their pharmacists the right to refuse to fill emergency contraceptives on religious ground, they treat their employees as badly as Walmart does (oppose unions, mostly part-time work, must work months on end before getting benefits and even then it's hard to get enough hours to qualify for benefits), they've been caught using sweatshops, etc etc etc etc.

I'd love to shop 100% at local merchants and I try to do as much of that as I can, but money is an issue as is the availability of some stuff. Sorry, but I can't afford to pay $20 for a t-shirt! Sadly, we don't have COSTCO in our area, which is where I used to do all of that kind of shopping -- they give blue, treat their employees well, etc etc.

Wal Mart, to the best of my knowledge, does not buy up competitors for greater market share. They simply out price everyone else, stay open more hours, offer better parking, make it super easy to find stuff, and staff the cash registers better than most grocery stores.
