1.2 Million Children Are Homeless in the United States
Edited on Thu Oct-05-06 07:29 PM by Jcrowley

Domestic Genocide of an Economic Nature
By Jason Miller
10/3/06

“The beauty of the dream vanished, and breathless horror and disgust filled my heart.”

--Mary Shelley’s Victor Frankenstein

Accomplishing a logic-defying feat, the wealthiest nation in the world has “attained” the highest rate of homelessness amongst developed countries. 3.5 million human beings experience homelessness each year in the United States. Almost a million are homeless every night (1).

In the most heavily militarized nation in the history of the human race, 30% of its homeless men are military veterans (2). What happened to “support the troops”? Obviously once military personnel return home, the slogan changes to “good riddance to bad rubbish”.

Ready for some “shock and awe” on the home front? According to the National Mental Health Association, “on any given night, 1.2 million children are homeless” in the United States.

1. You've got to be kidding me. This is too depressing.
The imbalance of hedonistic proportioned wealth and then, to read this is so unbelievably sad, and overwhelming to think about.

Think about that. 1.2 million - thats a nice sized city.

2. An everyday tragedy that few want to talk about or acknowledge
"And as each homeless human being dies, people like Barbara Bush will have one less “blight” on which to focus their beautiful minds."

4. Our government does not support our troups.
They discard our troups.

Our government does not provide a safety net for our citizens. They ignore our citizens.

Only wealth and power get noticed. Only wealth and power get served. Only wealth and power get assistance or cooperation.

We live in a nation that glorifies wealth and greed.

6. i would wager that there are a lot more than that
both children and adults.

i have been homeless myself and probably will be again in the near future (long story, but i'm okay with it) and there are many many people out there who are just completely under the radar and for all intents and purposes, do not exist.

9. and i'd wager that you know that especially well
as i assume the "sf" means san francisco...i was out there for a couple months earlier in the year, mostly sleeping in golden gate park/the panhandle or out on ocean beach...a few nights up on telegraph hill too, which included a couple laying out a blanket not 50 feet from where i was laying, never seeing me there, and proceeding to fuck each other madly and take pictures while doing it...the flash lit up the entire hillside, hahaha

out here. I'm worried about them now that the weather has turned.

Newsom has Project Homeless Connect going but most of the people I know out here don't have the resources to even get to Moscone Center. It's just appalling and Newsom claims our homeless population has been reduced by 2/3s. He's full of it and he gets there by manipulating numbers in the comfort of his office -- and by rousting people and driving them away.

13. That picture breaks my heart.
If only all the money spent on wars were spent on poverty, sickness, and our environment. Imagine where this world would be.

15. It sounds like when we are watching the Christmas Carol this
year we will wonder why we allow Scrooge and his buddies to destroy the home front.
