You want to know what matters in America? SEX SCANDALS
What is wrong with our nation when:

- illegal aggressive wars

- torture

- secret prisons

- the end of HABEUS CORPUS

- tax cuts all aimed at the most wealthy of people

- environmental degradation

- suppression of science

and many other horrible crimes that affect millions of people do not bring about much ire, but sexual messages to minors do?

What is wrong with our nation at its moral core?

1. to a point!
You're right to a point. But when it's our children being violated, i see why this is such a big story.

4. I agree it's horrible, but why is it bigger deal than
let's say thousands of innocent people being bombed to death or tortured? Isn't that a bit more of a priority than Mr. Pedophile in Congress?

5. Agreed, gotigers. Most people are very protective toward
their children, and it is a very personal thing when their children are harmed. It hits the bullseye called Family in a way that a lot of other things don't.

9. why do people assume that...
the media represents the priorities of americans? And why...do people always need someone else to blame, for situations that are out of their own control? And why is it, that the victim is the choice meat for those out for blood?

11. You want to know what I believe?
Let me spell it out for you:

Americans do have deep spiritual and moral values that go to their core, in general. But these things are suppressed by the media until Americans learn to abandon those things and think inside the politically correct realm, where torture is OK and sexual messages to children over the internet are awful.

17. I disagree
I don't find Americans particularly more spiritual (or less) than any other people on earth. So when those here want to say we are soulless because we like to watch TV or drive big cars, I say crap to that. But I think the reason they don't care about torture is because of JUDGEMENT. All children=innocent. All terrorists=guilty. So it's okay to torture the guilty. The children are all innocent. It's simplistic thinking. They don't give a crap about the terrorists. They refuse to think any of them could be innocent.

Of course, every terrorist or suspected terrorist was once (and still is someone's) child. I think Americans are simplistic. I don't think that is highly spiritual thinking. And simplistic thinking is exactly what George Bush preys on-your evil, he's good.

I don't think that is suppressed by the media. The media makes the story. If the media had a story on every night about innocents being tortured in Guantanamo Bay-would there be an outrage? Would there? Then maybe I'd have some faith in how greatly spiritual Americans are. I suspect they would turn it off and ignore it.

19. who are you speaking of?
do you know people who feel, think this way? Anyone I've known who espoused talking points, appeared to have no personal opinion about anything. It was like, they had lived their entire lives questioning nothing, or, more likely, were uncomfortable revealing their thoughts for fear of shame, guilt, or ridicule...so they co-opt what's available, and reflect whatever is put in front of them. Mirrors are everywhere.

10. We should have set up Bush or Cheney or Rove with a sweet thing
years ago and saved a few hundred thousand lives. But I know Democrats are "better" than that. We live in a Puritan nation. A innocent nation. Maybe after a few more wars and a little fascism, they will learn what Europe has learned. More sex and drugs, less death. But I'm not holding my breath.

that wasn't enough? What the hell! I guess there was never any proof that everyone in the White House was taking turns with "bulldog". Ot no one ever dug far enough into it. They covered their asses pretty good on that one, so to speak.

13. True!
"You want to know what matters in America? SEX SCANDALS"

But the truth is, we are all in "deep do-do" (as George H.W. Bush once opined) and my feeling is that if we are handed a "Deus ex machina" that can get us out of it, let it ride!

Why should all thoughtful Americans who love what this country really stands for have to suffer as a result of a lazy and disinterested so-called majority combined with a malevolent and anti-democratic administration?

15. I'm not as alarmed about that as you seem to be.
Yeah, it would be great if people were incensed about the more "meaningful" stuff. They aren't. Never have been, never will be.

Sometimes our side will win because we're concerned about the right things. But sometimes we'll win because the breaks go our way. This is one of those times.

Whatever drives these fuckers out of power, even if it's a sleazy old Congressman's pecker, is fine with me.

21. I think we need a decent media first
Because I do think voters care, it's just when they see no one else share their rage they think it must be silly to be angry about that. But the media loves sex predation

18. Worse, it's just the self-righteousness
Americans are so morally bankrupt that about the only thing they have to feel morally superior about is the most base of sex scandals. If people really cared about the lives of our kids, there's a whole host of things we could do to protect them and we'd happily spend the money. But we don't and mostly we don't because we care more about our money, our lust, our entertainment, whatever, then we do about just doing the right thing. So when a sex scandal comes along, it's the perfect opportunity to pat ourselves on the back and praise ourselves for not having lost *our* moral compass.
