Jay Fawcett destroys Lamborn in CO-5

Jay Fawcett absolutely destroyed Republican, and hand-picked Dobson man Doug Lamborn last night in their first (and probably only) debate, in Canon City, CO. Before a packed house at the Canon City City Hall, Fawcett got right to work early, taking Lamborn apart over internet contributions. He had to explain to Lamborn how it worked. Then they got into the war, where Jay, a decorated retired Air Force vet and Gulf War I vet, took Lamborn apart. Most of the debate centered on this issue, which couldn't have worked better for Fawcett, as Lamborn is the original chicken-hawk, stay the course man. At one point, Lamborn lost it and told a guy in the audience to "shut up", which doesn't happen here. The crowd gasped, and even the Repugs were out in the hall, shaking their heads.

Attention, DCCC...this one is more than winable.

That's awesome news! Is there any more coverage of this debate? The Gazette? Independent? Local news? I SO wanted to go down there for this but, my sons football game was yesterday, so, I did the mom thing.

CAÑON CITY - The first debate between Jay Fawcett and Doug Lamborn resembled a bare-knuckle brawl, with both men attacking each other and taking on audience members.

Fawcett, a Democrat needing an upset to capture the open 5th Congressional District seat, questioned almost all of Lamborn’s answers and asserted that as an Air Force combat veteran, he knows what the military and veterans need.

Lamborn stuck largely to the platform he used to win a six-way Republican primary to succeed retiring GOP Rep. Joel Hefley. The state senator promised never to vote for a tax hike and defended traditional family values and the handling of the Iraq war.

Sparks flew from the opening statements, when Fawcett took issue with a Lamborn news release accusing him of taking money from far leftwing contributors. The release highlighted an Internet blogger and Fawcett backer who said he felt no sadness in 2004 when bodies of security contractors were dragged through the streets of Fallujah.

Fawcett asked Lamborn if he supported mercenaries fighting the war rather than soldiers. Lamborn disputed his use of the term “mercenaries” while Fawcett continued pressing him to answer the question until a moderator stepped in.

“The great part of an election like this is, I don’t think you can confuse Doug and I,” Fawcett said later.
