Schwarzenegger "Relocating" Prisoners?
Edited on Fri Oct-06-06 09:35 AM by RestoreGore
Schwarzenegger issues "emergency" prison order Thu Oct 5, 12:54 AM ET

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger issued an "emergency proclamation" on Wednesday over California's overcrowded prisons, a move that will allow officials to temporarily house inmates in other states. Schwarzenegger cited severe overcrowding at 29 of the state's 33 prisons in making the proclamation, saying that according to corrections officials California will run out of bed space for its inmates as early as June 2007.

"Our prisons are now beyond maximum capacity and we must act immediately and aggressively to resolve this issue," Schwarzenegger said in a written statement. "I've ordered the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation to begin contracting with facilities in other states to transfer inmates to available beds outside of California," he said. "These actions are necessary to protect the safety and well being of the officers, inmates and the public."

Schwarzenegger included proposals for new prisons earlier this year as part of a legislative package but they were not approved by the state legislature. According to the governor's office, corrections officials were studying prison facilities in nine states to determine if they could be used to house California inmates.

But where? The relocation camps built by Halliburton? I'm surprised he can even do this.

4. "... this is a win for everyone."

INDIANAPOLIS (October 5, 2006) – Governor Mitch Daniels announced today he has authorized the Department of Correction to house up to 1,200 offenders from California in the underused New Castle Correctional Facility.

“We saw an opportunity and contacted California officials several months ago,” said Daniels. “We look at every way we can to be creative and businesslike, and this is a win for everyone. We’ll hire 200 people and make $6 million.”

Disgusting, like they're just pushing meat back and forth.

How soon till these "creative opportunities" (or some rendition thereof) involve international transfers?

5. Don't states do this all the time?
Not a big Ahnuld fan, but I was under the impression that states routinely shipped prisoners back & forth.
