Bush Could Have HAD OSAMA In Feb '01-But Did NOTHING

Q Ari, according to India Globe, the Taliban in Afghanistan, they have offered that they are ready to hand over Osama bin Laden to Saudi Arabia if the United States would drop its sanctions, and they have a kind of deal that they want to make with the United States. Do you have any comments?

Time to drop the fiction that these guys were ignorant, incompetent or indifferent.

16. I would say it was more LIHOP than MIHOP
after watching the competence level of this administration I would say they couldn't pull it off. The logistics of keeping something like this secret is beyond the abilities of the clowns running the circus. I think they knew it was coming and just let it happen.

21. Incompetence is only a subterfuge
Most of us think that Bush is an idiot, yet what has he NOT accomplished during his term?

He won in 2000 and 2004, got us into Afghanistan, Iraq and probably soon into Iran. He got his tax cuts passed, avoided testifying under oath, alone and on the record at the 9/11 hearing, was untouched by the Delay, Plame and Abramoff scandals and still has the support of most evangelical Christians.

And regardless of how bumbling our President and administration may seem, you still have to explain how this incompetence led to the destruction of WTC 7, a building not hit by any aircraft. Incompetence certainly didn't bring down that building. Nor did it lead to the holding of 10 or more military drills on 9/11, the stand-down of NORAD and the shredding of FAA tapes.

5. The reporter who asked this question is a real cut-up--see his wikipedia
entry at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raghubir_Goyal .

Ari most likely called on him only to deflect questions on some other urgent issue of the day--there are several googlable stories about how he was one of Ari's favorite "foils" for engineering an early end to a press briefing, or for preventing embarrassing followups from some other reporter.

IMO it's really ironic that this exchange on bin Laden is now probably the only reason future historians will have for reading the transcript of that particular press conference.

Minister makes secret trip to offer trial in third country
Rory McCarthy in Islamabad
Wednesday October 17, 2001
The Guardian
A senior Taliban minister has offered a last-minute deal to hand over
Osama bin Laden during a secret visit to Islamabad, senior sources in
Pakistan told the Guardian last night.
For the first time, the Taliban offered to hand over Bin Laden for
trial in a country other than the US without asking to see evidence
first in return for a halt to the bombing, a source close to Pakistan's
military leadership said.

15. They offered to hand him over to Saudi Arabia...
where I'm sure he would have been brought to swift justice...

Seriously, I hate Bush as much as anyone but I wouldn't have accepted that deal. And your headline is misleading and irresponsible. Bush wouldn't have had Osama- Saudi Arabia would. And I'm sure that's the last the CIA would have heard of him until 9/11 which almost certainly would have happened anyway.

There's plenty of real stuff to nail Bush on... why don't we stick to that?

It happened in Tora Bora as well and is quite well documented. It is "real" .

19. I know they had other (and better) opportunities.
That's the whole point. Why aren't we talking about those better deals he passed up instead of this?

Only an idiot would have given bin Laden up to the Saudis. Why don't we get on him for refusing to let the Taliban hand him over to the EU (a much better deal) or for Tora Bora. Those are "real" instances of negligence but this one (giving him to the Saudis) is just dogshit mudslinging. We're better than this.
