1. Intro from the column:
The story that touched our hearts this week was about 10 little girls shot point-blank in Pennsylvania’s Amish country.

Not 10 children, as some news reports put it. But 10 girls. The shooter wanted to harm only the girls.

Does it strike you as curious — the way it did me — that more wasn’t made of that?

Had he singled out and shot 10 black men or 10 Jews or 10 gays or 10 of almost any other group, we’d be calling it a hate crime — whether it fit the legal definition or not.

2. What we've got here is a clear case of Amishide.
Why are men fighting a war on the Amish?

3. I certainly had this reaction also:
“Every woman saw this and said, ‘Oh, my God, they sent all the boys away and targeted all the girls,’

Same reaction to the other school shooting also targeting girls where he did molest them before killing one and himself.

4. Yes, a very good point indeed and one that
needs to be repeated over and over again.

A previous thread, if you haven't seen it yet, http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x2314633 discusses pretty much the same issue.

Get your flame suit on though, it gets a little rough in there :)

We will never know. My personal theory was that he was so mad
at God for taking his daughter away, that he decided to take other people's daughters away too. I really think it's something as simple (and stupid) as that.

5. Violence by men against women is alarmingly common.
But yes, violence by men against girls is even more despicable, and this event is heart-breaking, just beyond anything.

I think there's truly something wrong with our whole society, in how women/girls are regarded and treated. It's just so endemic, it's hard for people to see and think about; and even on obvious levels, it's not a welcome journey of thought (hence all the "upheaval of the fabric of society" crap everytime women try to raise rights or consciousnesses -- the status quo is "a lot to lose").

6. My question is why
Why do people not feel absolute despair that the secluded completely innocent Amish community get targeted???

Was it because they have no security???

I just don't see how the Con-defenders can turn on the victims when the victimgs are so completely removed from the evils of our society???? It really shows how people like Coulter are completely out of their minds...

8. why
Because it is politically expedient. anything to take the focus off their own actions because they know their actions cant stand the tight of the truth.

7. Amish
I saw on Katie Kouric news(?) a section called free speech, a portion of the show where they let right wingers rant, the father of one of the children slain at Colombine HS. He equated the salying of his child by a pair of emotionally disturbed teenages with doctors who did abortions. two days later they interviewed the father of one on the slain amish girls. He stressed how much forgiveness they had to do.
Who has the right mind set here
